State of Havenwell & Aellyn

  • Lasra (January) brings with it the lightest winter yet; the temperate is mild, the snowfall light and fluffy, and the wind does not blow quite as hard as one might expect considering the time of year. This weather is consistent throughout the city limits, with the exception of one area: the central plaza, where the egg's nest is laid. That area is actually quite pleasant, heated by the cooperative effort of the residents who opted to cuddle with the egg and each other, creating something of a bubble, almost like an incubator. If the slight chill of the still-mild winter has you shivering, swing by the center of town to warm up.

  • Speaking of the egg, it has been a long time coming, but in early Lasra, cracks begin to appear across the surface! Days pass with little change, whatever is within the shell chipping slowly against its confines. It draws in an eager, anxious audience of locals, keeping a respectful distance but ever-hopeful that whatever hatches will bring good tidings. Eventually, though, the shell at last breaks apart, and what emerges is a pony-sized griffon, golden coloured and iridescent, wings damp and wilted, chirping curiously as he witnesses the world for the first time. Despite being newly born, the reincarnated Winged Lord carries within him a surprisingly wise look to his eyes, and as its body dries in the light of the sun, it begins to radiate a gentle glow, demonstrating to any detractors that this is, in fact, the final lost god. He remains in the center of town for a few days, meeting the people of Havenwell, accepting gifts and prayers and simple greetings, happy to experience both the world and the company of the people who helped bring it back from the dark. After some time he will venture underground to the tunnel from which his egg was originally rescued. Should anyone worry for him, his answer will be simple, calm, and to the point: "Don't worry, I am going to visit my friend. We have a lot to talk about." There is a subtle joy in his tone as he speaks. Once he enters the tunnel, he will vanish from the city and no longer be found, but the air continues to feel brighter, the city abuzz with warm energy. The world has changed for the better, and everyone can feel it.

  • By mid-month, the priests of all four temples have come forward to begin separating and reverently dismantling the nest in the center of town. What once were pillows, blankets, bits of string, and fluff are now fragments of the Winged Lord, blessed by his light, and they intend to save every piece. There are exceptions, however. To each and every offworlder, the priests send a message: come to the temple, we have a gift for you.

Should you go to the temple of your associated god, a priest will present to you a small, strange charm. It is a fragment of the Winged Lord's egg, bound and fastened with a string pulled from his nest. It looks fragile, but is astonishingly strong, seemingly unbreakable. Take care of it and do not lose it, you are told by the priests, for this is your way home.

  • After the eggshell charms have been distributed, news travels quickly that the underground tunnel has changed yet again. The Crawling One has devoured the earth surrounding the original gateway to its realm, and has encircled it tightly multiple times to create a new doorway, just as nebulous and wispy as before, but without the poisonous atmosphere of the prior portal. Its gate is lined with glimmering golden feathers, and it glows with a warm, inviting light. Should you venture close to it, you will be overwhelmed with the nostalgic feeling of familiar. It smells like your favourite recipe, it feels like an old blanket from your childhood bed. It gives you the distinct and unmistakable feeling of home, and very gently, it calls to you. You need only walk through.

    1) Should you wish to forget Havenwell, Aellyn, and your time in this world, crush the eggshell after you cross the threshold of the Crawling One's doorway. This will send you back to your world as you were when you left, and everything will be as if it were a dream: fading into nothingness when you wake up. (Only within the doorway will the shell be fragile enough to break.)
    2) Should you wish to remember, hold the eggshell charm gently, and carry it with you into your world. As long as it remains unbroken through the doorway, you will remember.
    3) Should you wish to journey with someone else and reach the same destination, hold your eggshells together, hands entwined, as you cross through the doorway. Whoever's world is the intended destination MUST lead the way, taking the first step. This choice comes with a warning: you will be lost from your world, and might not be able to return. Choose this option carefully, as the consequences are your own. Those who arrive in that world may find themselves separated, in different locations, but the charm will help to guide you, magically drawn to others who carry a fragment.
    4) Should you wish to stay in Aellyn, you need only refrain from crossing through the doorway. Your presence will be welcome wherever you go; the world still has a good deal of recovering to do, and many hands make light the work.
You will not be judged, for whatever option you take. The door will remain open until every offworlder has made their choice.

Current God Status & Effects
  • The final god power balance, from strongest to weakest, is:
    1. Rawna
    2. Diacht
    3. Ainea
    4. Ohma

Thanks to the awakening and reformation of the Crawling One and the revival of the Winged Lord, the gods have regained their ability to balance their own power. There still remains a long road towards true collaboration, but thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, they are well on their way to resolving their own issues. Collectively, Hugtopia netted a total of over 29,000 hugpoints! Well done, and thank you everyone!

  • And Thanks For All The Fish

In celebration of the rebirth of their god and revitalization, while the priests are carefully dismantling the nest the rest of the city's natives are hurriedly working to express their gratitude. By the time the offworlders receive their eggshell charms, there are eager residents wishing to see them off with charms and trinkets; some made with Havenwell's trademark fabrics and ribbons, some with seashells traded from Shoremere, and many with a mixture of both as a tangible mark of all that the world's visitors have aided in accomplishing. While they of course ask for nothing in return, if one should ask then the native residents can only think of one form of payment:

Leave nothing unsaid or unspoken. Share your secrets, confess your uncertainties, speak your thoughts and have them be heard by more than just yourself. Should you do so, in addition to a lovely charm and heartfelt well-wishes you may just feel a little warmth in your chest helping you onward in whatever decisions you should choose to make.

A Final Message from the Mod Team

a grey cat hugging a white cat with 'thank you' text at the bottom

  • This is the final event log of the game, a farewell finale where characters can say their goodbyes and go on their way, or decide to stay if they wish. No further updates will be made, but the community is yours to do with as you please. All that said, if you have any comments or final questions (related to either this event or anything that came before!), things left unanswered, please use the mod comment below and we'll do our best to satisfy. Otherwise, our job is done.

Thank you so, so much for playing with us. It's been a joy. Thank you for sticking with us through ups and downs, through the slow periods and the fast-paced shenanigans. Many of you have stuck with us since the very beginning, and we know how rare that is! It's been an amazing journey. Wherever we end up going forward, may your stories always be joyful to tell.

Goodbye, and have one last hug for the road!

Though the apparitions from the labyrinthine tunnels have been contained and sent past the once-sealed door, the question of what else lies beyond it still remains. Throughout the early days of a brisk late fall month, the native researchers work tirelessly to decipher the mysteries of what the portal might lead to.

And, perhaps more importantly, what to do about it.

October (Lasohm) Event Log

Lasohm's chilly weather may encourage residents and off-worlders alike to stay indoors and make themselves cozy with blankets and warm drinks or adjust their internal cybernetic temperature in the locals' case. Shops bring in their outdoor seating and stands, and the researchers that maintain the botanical gardens prepare for a seasonal yield of bright vegetables and grains, hopeful to regain their original forms and celebrate the harvest. Cozying up and preparing for cooler weather is not all they do: with the train successfully established, the third option of simply booking passage to Shoremere for fairer weather becomes more popular on weekends. In short, the days that pass this month are mild and uneventful, quiet and homey aside from a little boost in economy and trade.

But that all changed when... )

The integration of Shoremere and Havenwell throughout the late days of summer has so far gone swimmingly (to use the obvious water-based term) and enthusiasm in both cities appears to show no sign of slowing down. Natives of both locations as well as the offworlders of Havenwell have extended hands in friendship, and by all appearances relations between the two are continuing full steam ahead.

The time and day are nothing special; while most native and offworlders may be expecting something strange to happen, a slurry of bizarre circumstances, transformations or adjustment of attitudes and behaviour... instead, what arrives is a rush of warm weather, clear skies, and a rallying cry from the southern part of town: All Aboard!

Ah, the height of summer! The days are long and sunny, and while the nights remain almost as hot as the daytime, the clear starry skies are a wonderful invitation for a stroll once the sun goes down. The bright days of summer are the perfect time to be out and about in town, even if the warmer weather makes being in close contact a little more impractical.

There's a lot going on this month, plenty of work to be done. But as they say, many hands make light the work! And to make up for the grim and grey atmosphere awaiting those who decide to venture outside the barrier, the weather within the city limits is clean and clear, that perfect spot resting between hot and cold. The middle of Dianir brings to Havenwell the start of perfect summer weather. Be sure to give yourself a lovely break when you need to get away from the endless storm outside.

Despite the fact that spacetime has been a bit questionable in recent days, the seasons carry on as they should. Spring has begun to grow warmer, the scent of flourishing local flowers often in the air as they are set out to decorate native shops and homes with a burst of lively color. On a larger scale, the march of time flows as inexorable and steady as ever; the question is if that will remain the case for long.

April (Lasai) Fourth Wall Log

PROMPT: Fourth Dimension
a glowing rift at the end of a hallway showing another world beyond it

The usual peculiarities of Havenwell have in recent months tended towards the particularly odd; between the contrived coincidences and shifting stars of the prior month, one might begin to wonder if something was a little off about spacetime itself. But so far, it hasn't resulted in anything world-shattering, so maybe it's all reasonably harmless.

Until the rifts start opening. Small breaks in reality that glow around the edges, and though on average they seem about the size of a person, they're impossible to pass through…from this side. Because while they only tend to open briefly, they do so long enough to deposit someone from another place and time entirely before swiftly closing again. Perhaps someone from your own world, from someone else's, from somewhere unknown, maybe even yourself from another time entirely.

That's right, tell your friends because it's fourth wall time, Havenwell.

Timeline-wise, this shift will occur ONLY during the weekend of April 30th to May 2nd, after which point characters will either disappear or become permanent residents via the application process. This also means that the rest of the event effects will have worn off, and characters will be their normal selves through the duration of this prompt.

On this post, we've created a Toplevel thread (see below) for visiting players, so that anyone can track and see who's posted! When you've made a toplevel, feel free to comment HERE to let everyone know.

Some ground rules for the 4th Wall event:

For characters/accounts not in-game:
  • a character does not have to meet application qualifications to post to the 4th Wall Event, except in cases where there is an intent to apply when applications open. Duplicates, CRAU, AU, etc. are permitted for the event.
  • we do ask that crack shenanigans are reasonably limited, game rules are followed, and that the event involve characters only, not players or real people.
  • anyone can toplevel! It'll be a free for all. Go wild, have fun.
  • characters will be given a temporary, low-tech communicator for the duration of the event with limited network access, due to limited availability of the real deal.
  • you will not arrive with any items/companions beyond the clothes that you wear
  • check out the Setting or FAQ pages for location details!
  • Our World Status page gives extra information about the going-ons of the current month.
  • Feel free to use any of the prompts from the current event page!

For characters/accounts currently in-game:
  • players can decide for themselves at the event's conclusion whether or not memories of certain visitors remain, and to what extent; memories could become fuzzy, faces or communication obscured, they could disappear entirely, or they can remain fully intact whether the person apps into the game or not.
  • network communications with 4th Wall visitors that don't (or can't) app in will be wiped, with the locals citing a data error related to the older communicators being used. Technology can be unpredictable, huh!
  • any communication exchanges that you WANT to keep can remain with some discretion; for example, if a spouse visits and you happen to take a selfie with them, and they do not (or cannot) app but having that photo of them would give you comfort, feel free to keep it.

March (Ainir) Event Log

The weather is growing quite lovely, punctuated by a sweet scent in the air as local flowers begin to grow and bloom, signifying the start of what many argue is the brightest and most comforting of seasons. While not all bend the knee for Ainea, she is beloved and well known as the kindest of the local deities, so even denizens of other chapters appreciate the good will she presents when her season comes to play. Brace yourselves, residents of Havenwell: spring has officially sprung, and the mouse is in your house. (Theologically speaking, anyway.)

February (Nalom) Event Log

Nalom is the end of Rawna’s reign over the year, but despite the cold weather that still has snow piling up in places, the citizens like to keep this month light and warm with fun. Ainean priests begin adding her colors to Rawna’s silver and rainbow throughout the city, dressing up windows with pink and purple ribbons to complement Rawna’s decorations. They know the Rawnan priests won’t mind as they generally take it easy at the end. And since the offworlders have arrived, this month has taken on a life - and love - of its own.

January (Lasra) Event Log

Lasra is in full swing, and the city is covered in a blanket of soft, glittering snow. The turning of the year has been celebrated, and silvery decorations still pepper the streets to accent the natural glimmer provided by the gods. Overall, the city seems to be in a very good mood. Hopefully nothing comes along to spoil it.

Don't forget to check out the World Status page for full details of this month in Havenwell!

December (Ranir) Event Log

As another year winds to a close, the air grows sharp with a wintery chill; the perfect weather for curling up with someone under a cozy blanket with some warm hot cocoa. To contrast the cold weather comes a distinctly festive warmth to the city itself; it's some holiday season, even if the natives still can't quite grasp what. While recovery from the recent worm-based catastrophe is still an ongoing thing, the natives are going through with the festivities as they've learned to celebrate: Decorations strung about the city are a bit haphazard and in all manner of colors both holiday-themed and simply colorful in general, the spirit and enthusiasm are certainly there.

November (Malom) Event Log

With most of Havenwell left in varying degrees of shambles from the prior month's catastrophe, the city seems just a little bit more quiet and stony in ways not just owed to the chill of oncoming winter. However, the gray mood doesn't need to last; the offworlders and locals alike might just be able to band together to pick up the scattered pieces before long.

Unlike previous years, winter is approaching at a slower pace than usual. Whether this is believed as coincidence or the gods opting to give the city more pleasant weather while the reconstruction is ongoing is entirely up to each individual. Nevertheless, the sun is out and there is work to be done.

Lasohm brings with it a familiar chill and a dash of increased precipitation, as the city prepares itself for the coming winter season. Best practice is to go out with a jacket or sweater to avoid those goosebumps! Or don't and be cold, we won't judge. The wind carried over from last month doesn't help matters any, though at least the rest of the city is quiet and placid for the most part, as if entering an electronic hibernation. That peace is sure to last, right? Not like anything bad ever happens in Lasohm.

September (Ohnir) Event Log

Ohnir has arrived, and with it, the beginning of Ohma's reign. The usual switching of the colours around town began in full force at the start of the month, blue and gold peppering lining the streets and buildings like it does every year. The cats are even a little more energetic than usual, though you might not notice seeing how they are, you know, cats. Get some extra play time in while you can.

Some of the scientists can be heard around town arguing over which botanical designations to give the flowers that grew practically overnight along the green belt of the old wall. They're very passionate about the subject, so residents might find the arguments tiresome or entertaining, depending on your flavour.

August (Achtom) Event Log
Achtom is here, the pinnacle of summer, and the city is (tentatively) getting back into the groove of normalcy. Locals are intrigued and curious about the idea of a celebration for them, all things considered, and are more than happy to allow the festivity to help them forget all the unpleasantness of the last few months. Many will be in attendance, and are eager to learn and experience whatever their offworlder neighbours have to offer. Put on a good show, if you feel so inclined! They'll surely love it.

As it is the last month of Diacht's reign, their priests have begun to tone down the decor of the city, removing any frivolity that had been damaged in last month's rain, for repair or replacement and storage until next season. The streets are a little more bare than they usually are, colour-wise, but hey, Ohnir is just around the corner.

July (Lasdia) Event Log

Lasdia is here, and with it, the summer heat! Buy a fan, get some AC, cool down by jumping in the new pond that apparently exists on the west side of the city now, or the public baths' open pool. By all estimations, it's going to be a hot one, but the robotic residents are not certain as to what's changed to make it so. Some have pondered if it has anything to do with the barrier shifts, others theorize that it's simply a matter of sun cycles. Regardless, they're working hard to make sure everyone has access to sunscreen this summer.

Also worth noting, the numerous shifts in city culture that have been in place since July's World Status went live are still occurring, so characters might not find Havenwell especially friendly this month. Try not to take it too personally.

June (Dianir) Event Log

Ainea's time has ended and now Diacht's months have arrived. Dianir marks the beginning of the hot summer months with a rise in temperature as well as humidity. With each passing day, spring gives way to summer, and the natives of Havenwell are enjoying the blue skies along with the newly expanded barrier. With the most dangerous of the beasts gone thanks to offworlder help last month, researchers and conservationists head out on occasion into the newly opened areas to continue the work of cataloguing and preserving what they can find. Some take time to study the barrier and some just seem to enjoy being outside the walls for the first time in centuries. Meanwhile, the city within seems to have calmed from Ealom's excitement, settling into its usual routine with only a few…"hiccups."

If you can call them that... )
