December (Ranir) Event Log
The city of Havenwell is recovering very well thanks to your efforts, offworlders. The hole in the wall is sealed up and, while maybe not looking like new, it certainly looks sturdy and safe. The city itself has removed much of the rubble from the battles you fought, and the people are back to their regularly scheduled lives. They're eternally grateful that you continue to put in the time to rebuild this final bastion of civilization and are pleased to see that you enjoyed their festivals so far. As the weather of Ranir turns colder and the nights longer, some may even see snow dust the cobblestone and paved streets in the morning. The time of Rawna has come and with it...

❥ PROMPT I: At Least It's Not a Sweater

Normally when a new season belonging to a god rolls around, the temple priests gear up and start with temple festivities. Seeing how this is Rawna's month, however, nothing much of the sort seems to be happening. In fact, it's almost as if Rawna's priests don't even care that their god's season has started. Rawna is, after all, chiefly the god of Apathy, so is it all that surprising?

What might be surprising is the sight of Ainea's priests in pairs out around the city in their stead. Each pair carries with them a single bright silver sash and they alternatively stand in broad daylight or hide in the shadows of the buildings. Walk by on your own and you'll be left alone, but when the priests spot two people walking even remotely near each other, they spring into action.

The two robotic priests zip around you and another person with surprising speed, tying the sash off around you - either around your wrists, your waists, your legs, whatever it takes to tie you to another person. With a triumphant buzz of excitement, they declare "Happy Ranir! Kindness comes in many forms!" and depart to find a new pair of ~~victims~~ patrons. As they leave, one of the pair calls out an additional clue for you: "Be kind to unwind!"

Good luck, everyone, you're now stuck with this other person. You can either wait until the sash naturally falls off in a few hours, or you can take the direction of the priests and be kind to the other person to encourage the magical knot to come undone. Each compliment, word of encouragement, or other act of kindness directed at your new partner seems to loosen the sash a little each time, so get to winning the Niceness War.

Oh, and in case you were thinking of blasting, teleporting, or cutting your way out? No amount of magic or physical force seems capable of cutting or removing the sash. Hopefully you went to the bathroom before they got you.

❥ PROMPT II: A Delicious Delight

After a long hard day of dodging Ainea's priests or just slogging through the colder weather around the city, what could be better than imbibing a seasonally festive drink? Well, the scientists in charge of Experiment 73 certainly think so! They've added a limited edition drink selection to all of the replicators and have some delightfully festive booths spread about the city staffed by a few robots wearing Rawna's colors in their sashes and hats. There are five drinks in total to choose from and you should certainly try them! They're only here until the end of the month and then the scientists say they'll be gone! The best things in life are fleeting, aren't they? The best things in life are also surprises, so when you take a sip of these exquisitely delicious (honest! For once they're good) beverages, prepare yourself for a little trick with your treat.

Ginger and Honey Tea: A hot, thoroughly warming drink with the bite of ginger and the sweetness of honey. Drink this and you'll be shored up against the cold, but also feel compelled to tell or blurt out the truth. Whether you're asked a question or trying to tell a little white lie, you find you can't say anything but the truth. This effect lasts for up to an hour after drinking the tea.
Strawberry Shortcake Smoothie: A cold sweet treat of vanilla smoothie topped with sweet strawberry pieces and whipped cream. At the bottom, you'll find a layer of sweet sponge cake cut up into pieces. Drink this with its own special thick straw and enjoy the taste of cake; and the effect of a personal miniature snow cloud that appears over your head. The cloud dusts you and your immediate area within a foot of you with beautiful multicolored snow - and that snow leaves splotches of color behind that last for up to an hour after drinking the smoothie.
Hot Cinnamon Apple Cider: A deliciously steamy beverage that tastes of apple and cinnamon and comes with a cinnamon stick stirrer for effect. This beverage smells as delicious as it tastes and the aroma wafts around the area more strongly than the others. Drink this penultimate holiday drink and you'll find yourself heating up so much that you'll want to stay cold by giving your heat away via holding someone else. You'll want to be everyone's personal heater for up to an hour after drinking the cider.
Gingerbread Latte: A nice piping hot latte with the hint of gingerbread threaded through the coffee, topped with whipped cream and dusted with gingerbread spice. Served in a tall red cup that seems to transfer the heat uncannily well through its thin walls, sip this and you'll find yourself painlessly sprouting an animal's appendage at random. You can have one functioning or non-functioning, cosmetic animal appendage like a cat's ears, a dog's tail, a duck's beak or whatever else you can think of for up to an hour after drinking the latte. They can replace your original body part (e.g. your ears become cat ears) or grow superfluously (e.g. you have regular ears AND cat ears). You can move the appendages or talk with them as if they are your own, but they don't confer any special magical powers with them. So you can fly with those griffin wings, sure, but you're going to need to put the effort into it.
Hot Mulled Wine (alcoholic): This one isn't for children - and in fact, under 18 people might find it hard (but not impossible, be industrious, little ones!) to get their hands on this drink. Red wine is heated with spices and citrus fruit over low heat for several hours - or it would if it wasn't all synthetically created. The effect is the same though, a delicious adult beverage that's a nice way to spend an evening with someone special. And you'll want them to be someone special because drinking the hot wine makes you inclined to get a little steamy with people. Kisses, both chaste and passionate, seem to alleviate the urge which you'll be under for up to an hour after drinking the wine.

❥ PROMPT III: Winter (VR) Wonderland

There isn't quite enough snow on the ground to allow it in reality, but in the VR Cafes anything is possible. This month, the VR Cafes are decorated with snowflakes in odd patterns and designs - holograms, naturally - that spin and change shape and color in a timed routine. Plug into the games and you'll find a new selection among the usual offerings: Winter Wonderland.

There are two modes to Winter Wonderland and each are fun in their own ways.

Snow Fight! Head out into the powdery snow where fantastic snow forts await and battle it out with snowballs to claim the most territory or just see who can hit the other side the most. You can choose Team Battle, Solo 1vs1, or Battle Royale. All magic, skills, and cunning are at your disposal. While the snow might not be falling outside, it's definitely going to be raining down on you here, so bundle up and have some fun. You earned it!

Ski Lodge But maybe you don't want to go flinging snow down someone's shirt and would rather cuddle up on a couch in front of a big warm fire, huh? Sure, we understand that. Welcome to the Ski Lodge, a cozy getaway up in the mountains where you can relax with a hot chocolate (or cider, or glass of wine even) and curl up on the couches and experience a lazy afternoon in thick fluffy sweaters. It's even better with a friend, they say, so why not create this private little getaway for the two (or three or four, we're not judging) of you? For people wanting a romantic lean, you can always slip out the back (and out of your clothes if you prefer) into the private jacuzzi on the wooden deck, too.

For people who want to have some fun tearing it up on the mountain-side though, we suggest trying Ski-venture! A year-round game that lets you ski or snowboard your way down the mountain.

❥ PROMPT IV: A Mysterious Gift [REGAIN EVENT]

Toward the end of the month starting from the 20th and on, some people may find themselves drawn to Rawna's temple late at night, when most of the priests are offline or elsewhere. The only native creatures you can see here are the fledgling rainbow dragons which watch you from their various perches all around the sanctum. As you approach the temple's altar, you realize someone else has been drawn here as well. In the quiet, dim lighting, the barest of candles still burning and the watchful eyes of the dragons, you feel compelled to unburden yourself to the other person. Tell your tale of woe or sorrow, relieve yourself of a secret you've kept hidden for too long, and listen to your companion as well. They say a burden shared is a burden halved after all.

Once you've both shared something, a pair of dragonlings crawl up into the altar's clawed hands. They wind around each other until an iridescent light shines from their scales. The light is blinding and you must look away as it reaches its pinnacle and releases a burst of rainbow light. When you look back, the dragonlings are slithering away and in their places are two objects - one familiar to you and one to your partner - so long as both of you have shared. It seems your tithe has been rewarded with something from home.

It cannot be something your character did not own or have knowledge of in their canon or their CRAU. "Hmm."

Capital 'B' Big.

"Then I heard a voice, asking me what it was I wished for."

He folds his hands back together, gently, as he steels himself for what comes next. Kai's words ring through his mind, 'Even if it's the worst,' and even his own, 'if it's you, it's okay,' work their way into the encouragement that Rawna's temple offers. He still can't shake the thought that this might be asking too much from Kai, that what's next is somehow going to be a dealbreaker on their time together. Thinking back on it, he hates what he'd answered with, so why wouldn't someone else find it just as reprehensible?

"So, I told her..." he drops his voice down, enough so that only Kai can hear. They may be alone, outside of whatever divine wind might carry his words to the gods of this place, but what he has to say is for Kai's ears only. "That if nobody wanted me, they might as well be dead. And... that I would be better off dead, too."

Kai dipped his head down to listen, and... oh. Oh.

It had just been recently that he'd heard something similar. A tale of a song of destruction to wipe out humanity and in the end himself as well. Kai hadn't blamed him when Reyson had murmured that confession to him. The temptation was there, even if the Heron had ultimately chose to rise above it. This... was the other side of that coin. The one that Kai could not say he would not have chosen himself.

The one he could not blame Shinji for choosing, no matter how tight it made his chest. Because he was selfish. It didn't hurt because of the many-- it hurt to hear Shinji had wished the same for himself.

He'd stopped rubbing Shinji's back at those revelations, but now he lifted his arm again, holding him tighter. Shifting so he could draw him closer, carefully resting his forehead there against Shinji's again.

When that hand stops, Shinji can practically feel his heart do the same. For all the mental preparation he'd taken for the possibility that Kai could just decide he'd had enough, for how much he'd told himself he'd understand and not blame Kai, actually feeling that possibility rear its head was still terrifying.

What he wasn't prepared for, though, was this. This gentle, wordless act of comfort. All that steeling comes unraveled, and for a moment, Shinji's thoroughly lost on how to respond. Does... does he just not get it? Should he be making his stance more clear?

"Isn't it awful?" Despite himself, he leans forward into the touch, his voice losing any steadiness he'd managed to hold on to this far. "That we'd been working so hard to stop something like that from happening, only for me to turn around and decide it was okay? Just because I'd been hurt and left with nothing, that it was somehow everyone's fault?"

Kai cradled the back of Shinji's head, a gesture that was almost familiar now as he brushed his fingers through his hair.

"It might be awful," Kai had to agree at least in part. It was probably real bad of the hero to turn around and let the whole world burn. But if the whole world had turned on you in the first place... "But they put the whole world on your shoulders and left it there to crush you. When you're backed in a corner there's only so manly places to go. I dunno... what would have changed if you hadn't."

Kai had a feeling even if he did have all the information, it wouldn't have made much difference. Every choice felt like a bad choice.

"The only thing I know is that regardless, I'm glad to know you."

As much as that hand running through his hair, there's something incredibly, profoundly, comforting about hearing that, yeah, that was pretty messed up, but also, perhaps, he was not left with very many options. Even if other routes had been chased down, would the outcome have changed much? Would it have just been the same result by some other set of hands?

Probably, he thinks. He doesn't know how much comfort that thought brings him.

But, even after hearing that, Kai can still say that much, huh? Shinji's not sure he really deserves it, but try as he might, he just can't summon up the will to dismiss it, verbally or privately. Maybe if he had met people like him earlier... Hadn't he, though? Even just the once, and while that had ended. poorly. that little snag in his line of thinking feels noteworthy, somehow.

"Kaito..." How can you go and just say something that kind to him?? "I'm... I'm really glad we could meet here."

See, it was easy cuz he meant it. He was glad to know this soft-spoken boy that had somehow put up with him, opened up to him, comforted him... there was a lot there to be appreciated. There was a lot more still to know, and if this was the worst...?

Well. No one was going to be upset at Shinji for it more than Shinji.

Kai had always been a bit frustrated that being here meant he couldn't try to help Kei. Now though... maybe it was just because someone else needed him a bit more and he hadn't known it. Shinji was still human too.

"Me too," he told him softly. "It's good that you're here, Shinji." Warm and living. "Thank you."

Likewise, for Shinji, the idea of growing complacent with his stay in Havenwell felt like a cowardly thing to do, like it was just him running away from the mess he'd caused. Nobody asked to be here, sure, but if he had started to like it, then would that even matter?

He can only dig his heels in for so long, especially in the face of someone not just letting him know it was 'Okay' for him to be here, but 'Good', actually. Whether he likes it or not, he's here, now, still alive despite everything. It still doesn't feel fair for the rest of the people he's left behind, but maybe... just maybe, finding small joys and treasured moments wasn't somehow vile of him. Maybe he could start to take solace in the people who he's grown close with, that they were honestly glad for him to be here, even after he shines a light on his flaws for them like this.

He unclasps his hands, finally freeing an arm up to slip around Kai's back. He can't get himself to look him in the eyes just yet, but he wants to reciprocate some of that comfort, if he can.

"You, too," his voice is still wavering, though soft and sincere and steadier than it had been a moment ago. "Thank you, for always keeping me company."

Ah, there he was. The soft hints of a smile crept on to Kai's face, warmed by the other boy's willingness to reach out again. There we were. It was heartening, considering everything else. And the everything else made an astounding amount more sense. The skittishness, those extra sleep rattled early days, the whole lot of it.

Kai shook his head a little, gently brushing Shinji's forehead. "I should be thanking you for putting up with me," he said with a soft exhale. "... Would've been a lot lonelier, without you."

... Oh.

There had been a lot of assumptions on Shinji's part that he wasn't doing very much to contribute in any particularly meaningful way. Catching a fuller night's rest was good for the both of them, sure, but there had always been that feeling that he was still unfairly imposing - meals had been a decent way to mitigate that somewhat. In those attempts to stave off his own loneliness, though, he hadn't really considered that Kai might have needed the company just as much as he may have wanted it. He takes a moment to digest that thought, before setting it aside to examine more closely later. For now, he'll quietly take it at face value.

"I wouldn't call it 'putting up with you'," he argues gently. "It always feels... really easy to be around you. I like when we spend time together."

The quiet ebbed back in as Kai processed that again, still gently stroking Shinji's hair. It'd become a bit more common now, to say things like that. That it was nice hanging out. That Shinji liked when they spent time together. It wasn't always as glaringly apparent that it shocked Kai as it had been during that other late-night heart-to-heart, but... it still did. Somewhere deep in his heart he still couldn't quite shake it.

"I got real lucky then," was what he finally spoke back up with. "Not a lot of people share that opinion, back home."

The moment of quiet is honestly a welcome one, after all of that. Give them both a little time to think and simmer down after that boiling point was reached.

Especially if it means they're going to roll right back into heavy topics like that. Shinji's hold on Kai tightens a little in response, and he finally takes the chance to look back up at him. Ah, it must be his turn, then.

"I'm not going anywhere," he says, softly. It's as much of a general reassurance as it is an invitation to go ahead and continue speaking. After all, if Kai could sit and listen to him confess to wishing the world's demise and answer him with an immediate, warm embrace, to say that he's lucky that Shinji wants his company after that, then the very least he can do is hear out whatever may be on his mind, as long as he's ready to share.

Following those sorts of grave confessions, there was absolutely no reason why Kai shouldn't be ready to share. Besides the feeling that it was really Nothing when stacked against things that towered so high. Nothing more than just his lot in life, it didn't really mean much.

So when Shinji looked up at him, there wasn't anything radical in his expression. Just quiet contemplation as he mulled it over. He'd accepted all of it a long time ago, after all.

"Mmm, it's not a huge deal or nothin'. Criminal's kids just get a wide berth, y'know? Don't want to get dragged down with 'em."

Of course, the kinds of things adults gossip and worry about within earshot of children.

It may not be some kind of monumental confession, but this isn't a competition. Growing up as some kind of stigmatized child is difficult, no matter how you slice it. He knows. Of course he knows. And for it, the look he gives Kai is one of understanding.

"That must have been lonely."

The words "I had friends though" sat on his tongue, but didn't quite make their way out of his mouth. He did. They were real people. They definitely hung out. But it's one of those nights where Kai could be brutally honest with himself. It was that much easier sitting next to someone that had already given him everything he'd never really thought about before.

"Yeah," he murmured, "I guess it was. I hung out with folks, sometimes, but it wasn't really cause they liked me. I'm just convenient."

Shinji winces slightly at that last thought. Even he had people who, somehow, had genuinely seemed to like him back home. If it came down to it, he's sure he'd rather take the loneliness than risk sticking with someone who only saw him as 'convenient'. P-... probably.

The topic does kick something loose in his mind, though. An exchange he hadn't been meant to see, one that had eventually lead to a very frayed night for the both of them. 'Why go so far for me?', answered with, ''Cause we're friends'. He wants to give Kai the space to explore these admissions on his own, but Shinji's own curiosity gets the better of him, so after holding on to the question for a moment, he releases it gently out into the open.

"What about Kei...?"

Surely that had been a different situation altogether, right? Or is there more to the story there?

There was a little bit more to the story.

Kai made a thoughtful noise of acknowledgement. It was a little surprising to hear Kei's name come up, but it really shouldn't have been. It had to be curious, framed with everything else. Kai took a moment to sort through it, since no matter how you laid it out... it was a little... stupid. But it felt like, maybe, Shinji would understand a bit more than Kotobuki would.

"He was my first friend."

The only one that ever meant anything. He sighed a little.

"He was planning on becoming a doctor though, like his folks."

Up until he didn't die that one time, anyway, Shinji assumes.

But, ah, someone with high aspirations, from a successful family, versus 'a criminal's kid'. He sees where that might have been a tricky friendship to maintain at best, and at worst... well, he can really only speculate from here.

"I'm sorry," a genuine sentiment for however difficult that bond ended up being, and once again leaving space for Kai to continue at his own pace.

Kai shook his head a bit. "S'just how it is. His sister's got... some kind of thing no one's been able to figure out, so... that was more important." It was, up until he didn't die that one time. Eri was a good kid. He hoped she'd been doing alright.

"None of that's really mattered here though."

Studying to be a doctor in order to help your sister... that's gotta be an enormous amount of pressure, he thinks. Whether it was 'more important' than someone else, he can't really even imagine, but it sounds like a tough spot to be in for everyone involved. Probably even more tough if no one's seen or heard from Kei in a while, hopefully that sister is doing okay. What a truly awful situation.

He gives that another moment of quiet, respectful thought before humming slightly in acknowledgement. "Kind of like a fresh start, huh?"

Even if it's a fresh start with a lot of baggage brought along, at least they're the only ones who really have to dwell on it.

It really just depended on if they let that baggage get into everything else. Kai still had a lot of bad habits draped around him that he wasn't even all that aware were really bad-- they were just way things had always been. It was possible he might have just ended up in the exact same position of his own volition, had it not been for some of his encounters along the way.

"Something like that, yeah. A second chance or something." Kai looked at him. "For you, too."

It's hard to drop all of that just because there's a change of scenery and company. Everyone was brought here with just themselves and their experiences, after all. Even if there's no real obligation for him to feel tied to his past, no one to hold him accountable for it besides himself, and even if he wants to be a better person in the future, it's still tangled up so deeply in who he is that he's not sure he can completely escape being haunted by it somehow.

"Maybe." He does want to believe that, though. It's easy to feel optimistic for that to be true on someone else's behalf, while for him it feels almost unattainable, but... maybe. Maybe.

Well, if Shinji found it hard to accept for himself, that's what Kai was there for. "Maybe," he repeated softly, as if he didn't want to push that notion too strongly on him. There was an earnest intensity to his gaze though, betraying a bit of his hopeful beliefs.

Their pasts made them who they were, for better or worse, so Kai wouldn't say he'd change them. He'd deeply wish it would have gone differently for Shinji in the first place, because fuck he didn't deserve it, but... Some good company couldn't hurt, could it?

"We'll figure it out."

He leans in a little heavier against Kai at that last statement. By all accounts, it shouldn't be surprising to hear that 'we', but it serves as a great comfort to have it affirmed like that, that Kai isn't planning on taking off on him or anything.

He had done his best to discard the idea once before, but considering everything, he really can't help but vocalize it this time. "We're probably both pretty lucky."

Dangerous as that thought is.

No, he wasn't going anywhere. At least not for the forseeable future, if he could help it. It was a little odd to think about how when they first arrived, he'd spent days wondering if he was going to wake up in his cell thinking this interlude was just a dream. Now there was the lurking, unspoken worry that this was going to happen. Funny how that worked out.

There was a bit of shifting after Shinji leaned in a bit more, just so Kai could wrap his other arm around the other boy in an honest-to-goodness hug. It was just one of those times. "... Yeah."

Dangerous thoughts led to dangerous actions, you know.

Oh. So. Is this what's happening now? This... is nice, actually.

Shinji just kind of... lets this happen for a second or two before shifting his own position, allowing him to return the gesture. Letting his forehead come to rest on Kai's shoulder, he wraps his own arms around the other boy, any thoughts of how risky or dangerous this might be suspended for now.

"Thank you," he says quietly.
