November Intro Mingle Log

Welcome to Hugtopia, and to the city of Havenwell. This mingle is meant for new arrivals to get settled and meet the other inhabitants. New characters should be the only top-levels but everyone is free to tag around and make new friends. Who knows, you may find that Perfect Hug in here. You can use the prompts here, or create a wildcard of your own.

ICly, this takes place from the 2nd to around the 10th, with a proper event coming soon after applications are processed. The prompts below are optional, but are a way to get you started if you wish. To help you create your own prompts, please take a look through our Settings and FAQ. Click on each prompt's title to see the text.

If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to the FAQ or to the Mod Question thread below.

PROMPT I: Awakening
When you awaken, you're in the last outfit you remember wearing, (up to) three of your belongings laid nearby or your animal friend curled up by you, waking as you do. A stone slab is not the most comfortable place to sleep, but once you're awake, a humanoid-looking robot comes into the room and explains that you're in Havenwell, then leads you out of the room and into the main portion of the temple where a welcoming committee of similarly humanoid-looking robots hand over a clear smartphone-sized tablet, some starting funds, and explain their dilemma. Then they release you into Havenwell to pick your new home from free housing in the city and give you the chance to settle. It might be a bit disorienting, but thankfully there seem to be a lot of robots and even some non-robots around. Maybe ask them for help? Strike up a friendly conversation, get to know your neighbours! It seems as if you may be here for the long haul.

PROMPT II: Buddy System
two fingers together with smiling faces drawn on

With all the changes and the fear of a secondary attack lingering, the natives are a lot more protective of their newest arrivals. When new characters begin to appear at the temples, they receive the welcome speech, get their communicators and the simple map of the city, and a warning to stay away from the walls. Then they get taken to the front of the temple by a helpful robotic priest. Rather than turn the newcomers loose right away, they pull someone seemingly at random off the street and push the two people together with a cheerful, "It's dangerous to go alone, so please show our newest resident around. Please be buddies!" They wait until they're certain the pair is going to be moving off together before going back inside.

They try to place a new arrival with one of those who previously arrived, but who can keep track of all that, right? Characters may find themselves thrown together with an actual veteran or with another new arrival who only came here a day or even just an hour before them! Good luck helping each other out, offworlders, and don't lose your buddy!

PROMPT III: Virtual Research
a virtual first-person view of hands reeling in a fishing rod
After the attack, every part of the city is on repair duty and the means the Entertainment District as well. As new arrivals wander the city, they might be called into one of the numerous Virtual Reality cafes. These cafes vary in layout, but most have areas for the natives to plug directly into the machines and other areas which have older looking virtual reality helmets that allow flesh bodied people experience the games. For those who need assistance with their sensory inputs, basic options like audio descriptions of visual scenes, enhanced audio and descriptive speech, closed captions, and crude mobility chairs are available. A handful of cafes have other options like direct visual or audio cortex stimulation to simulate vision or hearing, or suspension tanks to allow simulated movement, but these are currently unavailable due to damage.

All of these facilities are, unfortunately, under repair. The direct plug-in systems are easier for the robot natives to fix because they can do the most important part of it - testing - by themselves. But for the helmets and other interface systems, they need your help. Naturally, they'll pay you for the work, but they need the offworlders to play the available games and record any areas where they find glitches. Playing with a partner increases your chances of finding and fixing any issues, so feel free to log in for free for once and test any of the following games:

  • Big Bass Fishing
  • The beautiful lake has blue-green waters surrounded by forest and rocky, reedy shores. You and your companion are on a small single-motor fishing boat and you have fishing gear - two poles in the water. As the game starts up a read-out announces the objective: Catch the largest fish before the time limit ends. What's the time limit? ...Well, that's your first glitch because it reads as static. Might as well start fishing though, right? It doesn't take long to catch a few regular sized fish, nothing too exciting, and then? You get the big one - it bows your fishing rod nearly in half as you reel it up. The fish leaps into the air and you realize this is your next glitch because the fish hangs there - the size of a minivan - and yells, "BIG. BASS. FISHING. ATTACK." The fish slaps its fins and tails at the boat and now you and your fishing companion better fight this fish or you'll end up in the lake or worse.

  • A (un)Familiar Experience
  • Jump into the life of the temple familiars and see life from their perspective! Choose the temple, any temple is fine, and be transformed into a fledgling rainbow dragon, a purple mouse, a white raven, or a blue feline. You're free to move about the virtual confines of the temples and, in fact, you can even interact with other familiars in their temples - who may be other players in this game. Play, climb, try to get your fledgling wings to fly, tumble about with the other mice, enjoy your simple life as an animal! --or you would if you weren't an insane size. Rather than being a small mouse, you're the size of a horse. That fledgling rainbow dragon? About the size of a fly. The building sizes are off, too - one might have door that's 30 feet tall, but a ceiling that's only 12. Everything else seems fine, but those sizes? Well, you better figure out how to get around that.

  • Robot Crossing
  • Logging in with another character will net you a little farm and a variety of games to choose from:
    1. Pick and harvest as many Aellyn vegetables and fruits as you can before the timer runs out! The more you pick, the better your score. Work together with your partner to clear the field in any way you can. Strangely, once you finish clearing a tree or a field row of their bounty, they seem to magically refill when you turn your back. Strangely, when the timer runs out? It flashes 00:00 and the game...doesn't? Stop? In fact, the fruits and vegetables just keep multiplying and multiplying and if you don't hurry up you might just get buried in them all!
    2. With a partner, use the giant slingshot to launch comically large fruits into a garden patch of other colored fruits. Match a line of 3 or more similarly shaped fruits to clear it from the field. The more fruits you can clear, the higher your score - aka welcome to Fruit Crush. Stack lines of 6 or more to get shining clear diamond fruits that clear the entire row and snag yourself some bonus points. Or they should, but whenever you clear away a matching set, the fruits explode, sending fruit bits and juice everywhere - most notably on you and your partner. Still, the game is going on and it looks like it won't stop until you finish, so good thing it's all a computer game, right? Sure feels real though - reeeeeeally sticky.
    3. You and your partner(s) are given a magical golden pumpkin and it's your job to grow it into the largest pumpkin possible. Why? There's a county fair of course and the largest pumpkin wins! But how do you grow this pumpkin? Well, for whatever reason? This pumpkin is already the size of a grizzly bear and it just won't stop growing! You and your partner better find a way to stop it from growing out of control or you might get (virtually) crushed! You could do a song and dance routine together to touch the pumpkin's soul to teach it moderation or calm its insane vegetable puberty. You could hold hands and share stories and entertain the pumpkin until it feels satisfied that it's grown enough. You could just hack and slash at it in an attempt to reduce its unwieldy bulk. The possibilities are endless and so is the pumpkin's growth, so you better hurry!

[ The Architect. Her father. ]

There is too much that we do not know. Bear their existences in mind as you uncover more about this world, but you must not act in needless haste.

[ Chroma wasn't restored overnight. So, too, won't be Aellyn.

He leans forward, just enough to drape his free arm over his lap and shift some of his weight. That's all he has to say on the matter. If the same holds true for her, he might excuse himself soon to retire. ]

[ No use speculating, because as of this moment it is unnecessary, and Somnus only does necessary things.

He shifts his weight, as if he is about to move, and... ah. He must be tired. Now that she thinks of it, she is, too. A bed would not be terrible right at this moment, but. It feels rather comfortable as it is on this couch. She looks down at their joined hands, then follows the trail of his arm up to his shoulder, his face. ]

You're... right. [ She agrees with him softly: you must not act in needless haste. It has only been one day for both of them. They have time. They both have time: he, given flesh and blood by the gods, pulled from wherever he had remained as a spirit to this world; and herself, pulled from her seal and tomb below the Cloud Sea.

The have that time... to do what they can for this world, and that includes remaining in contact. ]

In fact, it a good time for sleep.

[ She scoots closer, her leg alongside his, and her upper arm against his as well. She leans her head against his shoulder, tilting her head to look up at him. ] Do you mind?

[ His eyes have just drifted shut when he feels her leg press against his. Their arms meet and he opens his eyes. Mindful of her head on his shoulder, Somnus locks eyes with Pyra. The angle is awkward, but it'll do.

Most would part after deciding on what she has. Her actions tell him otherwise—and more. ]

You mean to sleep here.

[ A corner of her lips curve upward. Don't give her that look, his eyes were drifting shut just now!

She lifts her hand, holding his, upward. Their fingers are interlaced. ]

For this world. [ She will do anything to help it. ]

[ As will he. Exhaling deeply, he straightens his neck and closes his eyes. Guiding their hands down to her nearest leg, he rests them on her lap where her wrist won't be strained. He opens his eyes again, half-lidded this time. ]

Sleep, then.

[ As she looks at his profile one last time, she wonders-- about his swollen eye, his injury, and then... of the other who shares his likeness. With his eyes closed and his expression made less severe, he looks so much more youthful, and the resemblance to the other is uncanny.

Do the dead dream?

Her eyes flutter shut as she lays her head about his shoulder, settling her back against the couch. She's grateful for him, for his willingness and like-mindedness to do what he can to help this world with her. That thankfulness extends to his shoulder, his warmth, so that she too might rest.

Does she dream? Yes. Ever since being awakened with humanity, she has experienced dreams thankfully she doesn't sleepwalk unlike SOME people. Will she dream for however long they might sleep upon this couch? That is anyone's guess. ]

[ He moves back against the couch with her, but he does not sleep as readily as she does.

Once again, the future has slipped away. In its place, the past greets him. Even Pyra, of whom his last memory is an unsmiling visage, has regained that melancholic smile of hers. He, meanwhile, simply continues to be.

With only his thoughts to provide distraction, the swelling in his eye competes for his attention. Lest he disturb Pyra's rest, Somnus keeps still and endures. Familiar voices fill the silence in his head.

"You were my brother, no crown or kingdom was ever worth that to me. But it has ever been clear to me that sentiment was never shared."

"He deserved better than what you did to him. He deserves better."

"You care enough to flinch. That is indication that you are least not a complete monster."

"You are allowed to grieve, just like anyone else. I know you have feelings despite what you may want others to think . . . This may be your only chance, Somnus."

Has he not done enough, he thinks.

"Somnus . . . You matter. What you feel . . . how you feel . . . it matters."

He closes his eyes, his body weighed down by a bone-deep exhaustion he hasn't felt since he was alive. Mercifully, Pyra doesn't remember. He exists to serve; anything he feels was shaped by the gods, and so he must continue to carry those feelings—alone, as they are his shortcomings to bear.

For the first time in years, he drifts off to a dreamless sleep. ]

[ And for the first time in as many years, he rouses.

Bleary eyes slowly flutter open. Disoriented from his abrupt awakening, he lifts his head. Instinct drives him to get up; however, in his grogginess, he's entirely forgotten why he was on the couch. His gross motor skills fail him in his attempt to rise when an unexpected burden pulls on one of his hands, and he pitches sideways into another body with all of his weight. ]

[ Today has been a day of many firsts. Her first time walking upon a world, her first time holding hands with others, her first time eating, her first time holding books and scrolls within her hands, her first time sleeping... and, as it turns out, her first time being rudely awakened from her slumber.

Startling awake, she winces as a new weight falls atop of her, bulky and uncoordinated for the few chaotic seconds just after the crash. It feels like a body.

It is a body. ]

[ She opens her eyes with a gasp and sees-- shades of blue. Past midnight and dark within the room, it is only the teal blue light of her crystals illuminating the somber and cool blue of familiar eyes and hair. She blinks. She stares at--

Everything that she might see upon his face, everything she might discern. (Briefly, she wonders of this is the face with which he had passed from the world: youthful, serious, ...handsome.) Everything about him seems the same, except for the first few moments where he seems disoriented, his gaze unsharpened. Despite his confusion, she notes the severity of his expression remains, as if he is just as capable of striking out in this state as any other.

She blinks again.

Lying like this, she realizes... he is warm. Of course he is warm, he is alive right now. He must not be used to having a physical body, of having a presence that might interact with anything solid-- such as whatever it is that had caused him to fall (her hand still holding his had been the culprit, not that she is aware). Similarly, he must not be at all used to...

Injury.

Pyra remains silent, still. Her hand lifts to him, fingers dusting lightly just beneath the corner of his injured eye. Up close and with the shadows of the night accenting all the angles of his face, it appears far more ghastly than it does in the light. Her lips part, and her chest rises as she draws in a breath.

She cannot heal him, but her other can.

Her otherself will not, however, which only leaves Pyra lying beneath him in silent concern... ]

[ His hand, still wrapped up in another's, is pressed awkwardly between their bodies. Somnus blinks once, then twice. Bit by bit, his head ceases to swim until he feels himself and a strange light draws his lucid gaze.

He finds himself looking straight down at Pyra, who brings a hand up to touch his face where . . . Era had struck him and healed most of the damage, he remembers, leaving a single mark to serve as a reminder of her warning. That reminder has done its part and presumably caught Pyra's interest. He remembers, too, her shock upon seeing his face mere hours ago.

The couch. Her proposal.

In rigid motions, he slides his free hand up the floor and next to Pyra's head with the intention of pushing up and off of her. He has yet to fully regain his bearing, however, slowing his movement like he's wading through water as a result. ]

[ Pressed between him and the rigid floor, she surprisingly doesn't terribly uncomfortable, and even if she were, his current state is far too much of a distraction to bother. Her gaze remains upon the bruised area around his eye.

This, however, was the result of my own actions.

But what does that mean. He has only been here a single day. Does he have enemies here already? Are others in danger, is she in danger for associating with him? It would not change her mind about staying with him, but she would like to know.

Caught fallen between the couch and the table of their living room, they have little room to move. It's awkward, their legs tangled; it's tight, with little means of leverage. He's moving, meaning to push himself off. A single word, hushed, escapes her regardless. Her breath flutters upon his cheek, as her eyes leave the bruise to properly lock with his. ]
--Wait.

[ If it will grant a delay before he pulls away, she will take it. ]

[ He stills as he's about to straighten his arm. Close as they are, he feels her breath and the warmth of her body under him. If he didn't know better—and if not for the otherworldly glow or that vibrant head of red—she could pass for a human being. (One he's all but tackled onto the floor, he realizes.)

But she isn't. She's something more, and so he waits and looks into equally bright eyes when she says the word. Though her reason eludes him, he doesn't move. ]

[personal profile] iustaegis 2019-11-10 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She shifts ever so slightly beneath him, her spine adjusting with a faint arch to provide some relief. With this closeness, she might feel the rise and fall of his chest against hers: another sign that he is now alive. In contrast, she has no heart, no lungs, but the construct of her body mimics it all. She breathes in, out, in tandem to his.

The world, he had said, in response to her question as to what he finds beautiful. And then as an answer to help this one: To do what must be done, for it.

Noctis has a destiny to bring light to his world, yet he remains uncertain about that destiny (perhaps, in part, that he doesn't truly know what it entails at its end), but his heart remains in the right place, as he has an unshakable want to help. It is never that simple, however. Knowing how destiny works, she is certain that all within Noctis' world are tied within it like threads woven into an elaborate tapestry, no matter how small or large the stitch. Somnus is in that masterpiece, too, she is sure. But unlike Noctis, Somnus...

She will ask him, one day, the same question she has asked Noctis: to what lengths will he help his world? when she already suspects she knows this man's answer. It is that answer, that unshakable duty to the world, to do whatever it takes, that she favors far more than uncertainty.

Her gaze returns to his bruised eye.

This, however, was the result of my own actions.

No. No, it was not, and it doesn't matter who hurt him. What does is... ]

...Why do you blame yourself?

[personal profile] meridio 2019-11-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ She seeks something from him; that much is writ plainly across her curious stare. Judging from the way she drifts back to his bruised eye, she'll ask for an answer that he has no intention of giving. And ask, she does.

Drawing back, he sits on his heels to relieve her from the pressure of his weight. Their hands finally, completely separate as he steadies himself just out of the cramped space between the couch and the table.

He extends that same hand to Pyra as he climbs onto his feet. The daughter of the Architect has no business lying on the floor. ]

The only light within this room is her, steady and unwavering; with this, no shadows flicker around them. He basks within its faint glow.

[ She claims that it concerns her, likely out of that endless compassion she bears for the worlds and their people. Objectively, however, she has nothing to do with his wrongdoings, and he answers thus. ]

My presence will not jeopardize the restoration of this world. That alone should be enough.

[ In the end, the worlds take precedence. The same applies to her: she won't be hindered by sharing the same roof as him. ]
iustaegis: (pic#13566203)

[personal profile] iustaegis 2019-11-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ She starts-- stops... and then begins again. Her fingers twitch within his. He doesn't seem to understand; rather, he doesn't see a point.

She needs to bring that point into his perspective-- why his it doesn't matter attitude does not suit their purpose to help this world. If anything, it harms it. ]

Don't you know, [ Her thumb runs over his knuckles. ] it becomes easier to hold someone's hand... when you know them better? [ She is not an automaton, as much as she is part of Rawna's sect (and him, too, if he belongs to the same god). ] Therefore, it behooves us to care for each other. [ This, she sees as absolutely true. ]

I care for you, Somnus. Which is why that... I want you to know that whatever happened, it was not your fault.
meridio: (05)

[personal profile] meridio 2019-11-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ She cares despite knowing next to nothing about him. His hand tingles where her fingers touch his palm and her thumb brushes over his knuckles. In the dark that's illuminated solely by her light, the sensation wrought by her interaction with him seems heightened.

Can he not do the same? Contrary to what most would believe, he has always cared. But his nature and the horrible deeds it has spawned will only drive others away. For that reason, it's better to keep everyone at an arm's distance while keeping them close enough for the gods' satisfaction.

Moreover, Somnus knows the truth of the past better than anyone else, and it is this: whatever the punishment, he has earned it. She is foolish to give him this false reassurance.

He looks down at her hand in his. Delicate fingers belying a great power have no need to comfort him. ]

If you truly care, speak no more of it.
iustaegis: (pic#13566216)

[personal profile] iustaegis 2019-11-11 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ Grown like him, millennia old like him, he should know that that is now how caring for another works. But for this next gesture, she doesn't need to speak.

She brings his hand up between them... and then to her, pressing his hand to just to the left of her crystal, where her heart should be. It's yet another way to tell him that she cares, this time without saying it at all. She keeps his hand there for a few moments longer. ]

...To what lengths will you help this world?

[ Now with what she's previously said, her question bears more weight. It's no just matter of touch-- it's a matter of connections, for she truly believes that touch becomes easier to initiate and to sustain when trust is involved. And that means vulnerability. That means weakness. That means letting another person in. Anyone can engage in all sorts of contact with another to help these gods, but who among them will also sacrifice their shields, masks, and walls to provide the most? ]
meridio: (02)

[personal profile] meridio 2019-11-11 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
For Aellyn, I give this body.

[ The gods and Aellyn may take the flesh they've bestowed unto him. There is no pride in it for him. So long as it is within his ability to give, be it in combat or through touch, he will do so. He does not fear even death itself, for it has already taken his body once.

What he fears is losing the future.

Emotions are a hindrance. They cloud one's judgment and detract attention from the root of the problem. For all the joy they bring, there is also an indescribable pain. His hand laid by her upon her chest—why else had she shed tears on that night when he'd said that a divine weapon had no place among mortals?

This is not Chroma. The gods desire contact, not bonds, as tribute. ]

Such a length cannot be measured.

[ She keeps his hand there for a moment longer.

Such a serious expression he wears. Severe, and-- guarded. There is a destiny tied to him, she knows that much even if she is blind to its details. She first says what she suspects he already knows: ]
Giving all means relinquishing control.

[ Her hand pulls his away from her chest, pausing to hold his hand briefly between them. Then, she mirrors the gesture to bring her hand to lie over his chest. From her heart, to his: that is the meaning of this exercise. ]

It also means being vulnerable.

[ It is not negative touch. Not neutral touch. It is positive. There must be meaning behind the contact, and to have that meaning? She is certain that there must be a bond of sorts. In that context, the guarded expression of his makes sense: being vulnerable is never easy. It is frightening. ] Are you prepared for that?
meridio: (36)

[personal profile] meridio 2019-11-12 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ Her hand presses against his chest, establishing an intangible yet physical connection all the same. Somnus moves neither closer nor away. He accepts the touch for what it is.

Mortals crave such a connection. Those with positive bonds share a higher likelihood of engaging in the sort of contact the gods of Havenwell require, but such bonds are a means to the end and not a requisite. By deeming them necessary, Pyra has demonstrated her way of thinking to be entirely human and, as ever, incongruous with what she is.

Or perhaps she means to guide him, who is human by all rights—and who doesn't need the emotional motivator to seek out another's touch in a harmless light. ]

The gods have asked for contact, and I intend to answer.
iustaegis: (pic#13566203)

[personal profile] iustaegis 2019-11-12 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ She repeats, because he is not answering-- ]

Are you prepared, Somnus?

[ --albeit, spoken a little more softly. It is fair for him to admit that he's not ready for that vulnerability. ]
