October (Lasohm) Fourth Wall Log

Speaking of Wall Breaking...
The ghosts in town sure are weird, huh? But they're settling down, as the month draws to a close. They're becoming less anxious and random, their behaviour growing sort of… focused. As time passes some of them begin to develop features. They can interact with the world more consistently. You can… hear their voice.

And then suddenly they are people, real and physical and just as confused to be here as you are. They could be anyone, from your world, someone else's world, a place you've never heard of… some of them could even be you, from a different universe, a different timeline, an unknown reality. What does all this mean?

IT'S FOURTH WALL, Y'ALL. Tell your friends, people interested in apping or just playing around in the setting, anybody! Time to break the wall down and have some fun.

This post serves as a replacement for the usual Test Drive Meme, in order to consolidate the chaos a bit. Though it is being posted now, timeline-wise, this shift will occur ONLY during the weekend prior to applications opening: October 30th to November 2nd, after which point characters will either disappear or become permanent residents via the application process. This also means that the rest of the event effects will have worn off, and characters will be their normal selves through the duration of this prompt.

Some ground rules for the 4th Wall event:

For characters/accounts not in-game:
  • a character does not have to meet application qualifications to post to the 4th Wall Event, except in cases where there is an intent to apply when applications open. Duplicates, CRAU, AU, etc. are permitted for the event.
  • we do ask that crack shenanigans are reasonably limited, game rules are followed, and that the event involve characters only, not players or real people.
  • anyone can toplevel! It'll be a free for all. Go wild, have fun.
  • characters will be given a temporary, low-tech communicator for the duration of the event with limited network access, due to limited availability of the real deal.
  • you will not arrive with any items/companions beyond the clothes that you wear
  • check out the Setting or FAQ pages for location details! Also, have a look at the October event log, to see what else is going on these days.

For characters/accounts currently in-game:
  • players can decide for themselves at the event's conclusion whether or not memories of certain visitors remain, and to what extent; memories could become fuzzy, faces or communication obscured, they could disappear entirely, or they can remain fully intact whether the person apps into the game or not.
  • network communications with 4th Wall visitors that don't (or can't) app in will be wiped, with the locals citing a data error related to the older communicators being used. Technology can be unpredictable, huh!
  • any communication exchanges that you WANT to keep can remain with some discretion; for example, if a spouse visits and you happen to take a selfie with them, and they do not (or cannot) app but having that photo of them would give you comfort, feel free to keep it.
  • Similar to the TDM, 4th wall threads cannot be used for AC or AC Reward purposes unless it is between characters already in-game.

Click the above prompt to expand for details. Timeline-wise, this occurs October 30th to November 2nd. For players currently in-game, if you have any questions, please direct them to the FAQ or to the Mod Question thread on the original plotting post.

On this post, we've created both another Questions Thread and a Toplevel thread (see below) for visiting players, the latter so that anyone can track and see who's posted! When you've made a toplevel, feel free to comment HERE to let everyone know.

[ There were so very many things Sephiroth could have said to that. He could have pointed to his impeccable record, pristine until the very end. Likewise, he could have weighed the costs of such loyalty. But all these thoughts were not for the likes of Rufus, nor anyone save the few people he deemed important. ]

I see. It seems you are harboring some sort of misconception that I need your permission for anything in the first place. Allow me to correct it for you. I don't, nor will I ever again. I completed my last mission for ShinRa. Whether here or there, I am now finished with your company.

[ Sephiroth turned even more of his attention away from Rufus. It was a clear sign he had little more to say to the man. ]

[Yes, that was a definite dismissal if he'd ever heard one. Yet, as his father would no doubt attest to he wasn't very good at heeding such dismissals when he didn't wish to do so. Usually with his father it was because his father tried to end arguments with them, and most of the time unfortunately, his father got his way.

Unfortunately for Sephiroth, Rufus had no inclination to leave him alone just yet. Oh, certainly he knew reasonably enough that this version of Sephiroth was the no doubt not the one who had seemingly murdered his father, but the man had yet to actually answer the question he'd asked on his time here and well, it wouldn't do to depart with such animosity still between them, even if it was rather one sided.]

You're not the first SOLDIER who has informed me personally of their departure from the company.

[He let his eyes fall back to the list in his hand as he spoke, attempting to see if any of the volumes before him on the table might be on the list, though as before the majority of his attention remained directed at the silver-haired man beside him.]

Personally, I don't care what you do during your time here as long as it doesn't threaten me or anything I might decide to do here.

[ Rufus was persistent. Sephiroth had to give him that. Most people found him difficult to handle even when he wasn't trying to actively shake them off, but then Rufus Shinra was not like the rest. That much was obvious. ]

Doubtless, I will not be the last.

[ Sephiroth turned a page in the book, not the least bit impressed by whatever veiled threat Rufus was trying to make. It was so far beneath him that, as with most things, he didn't even feel the need to acknowledge it. ]

I have my own plans.

[ Nevermind that he didn't quite know what those were anymore. He would not remain in a state of limbo forever. ]

[Yes, if there was one thing he excelled at it was being doggedly persistent when he set his mind to it.]

Given I was brought here the day after that first happened, I think you will be, unless somehow they bring more SOLDIERS here.

[He finally located one of the titles on the list among the books on the table and pocketed the paper before reaching for the book in question.]

You never did answer my question, how long have you been here?

[Whether it would be answered this time around was anyone's guess, but it never hurt to reiterate it and see what happened.]

[ The number of SOLDIERs had doubled in as many months, though Rufus could not have known that, nor could he have guessed that at least half of them were no longer aligned with ShinRa. Sephiroth wasn't about to reveal this information and he very much doubted Rufus would be able to find out on his own, at least where Genesis was concerned. It was only because Sephiroth knew him so well that he had been able to discern his presence in the first place. ]

Long enough.

[ It was the principle of the thing that had Sephiroth reaching out lightning quick to flatten Rufus's hand against the book. All of this without looking up from what he, himself was reading because in the end even this little display did not really matter to him. He was simply making a point. ]

Well? How does it feel knowing that right now you are an energy source?

[ Sephiroth's expression and tone of voice remained cool and aloof despite everything. If possible, he seemed even more relaxed than before. ]

[It would figure that his question would be answered without actually giving him any sort of actually informative answer. Though attempting to press the other man for an answer that actually gave him the information he wanted was abruptly put on hold when Sephiroth moved quicker than he could actually track to cover the hand that had been going for the book.

And was currently still effectively holding it and one might even say the book hostage as Sephiroth spoke.

The idea of him being an energy source was admittedly an unpleasant one, though the idea that just by the other man holding his hand he could actually produce anything other than silent unease on his part was in contrast a bit ludicrous.

He refrained from showing any visible reaction to the hands currently resting against each other, nor to the question. Instead of answering Sephiroth's questions, Rufus replied with one of his own, keeping his hand motionless and with a minimal bit of effort relaxed beneath the stronger hand covering it.]

Is it really so simple as this?

[ Rufus either did not perceive the point Sephiroth was trying to convey or was hiding his understanding very well. Either way, Sephiroth had wasted enough time on this man and all he represented. In several short motions performed with textbook military efficiency, Sephiroth grabbed the book under their hands and tucked his notes inside. The idea of earning Dora from Rufus Shinra did not appeal to him in the slightest, nor did the thought of their combined generated energy benefitting the so-called gods somehow. ]

You'll find out, won't you?

[ Sephiroth stood without another word, leaving all the rest of his books on the table. In truth, the only reason he was taking this one to begin with was to make another point. He would drop it in the returns bin on his way out.

Sephiroth walked around the table and made his way down the rows of stacks with all the slow surety of a person imbued with confidence. ]
