❥ Speaking of Wall Breaking...

The ghosts in town sure are weird, huh? But they're settling down, as the month draws to a close. They're becoming less anxious and random, their behaviour growing sort of… focused. As time passes some of them begin to develop features. They can interact with the world more consistently. You can… hear their voice.

And then suddenly they are people, real and physical and just as confused to be here as you are. They could be anyone, from your world, someone else's world, a place you've never heard of… some of them could even be you, from a different universe, a different timeline, an unknown reality. What does all this mean?

IT'S FOURTH WALL, Y'ALL. Tell your friends, people interested in apping or just playing around in the setting, anybody! Time to break the wall down and have some fun.

This post serves as a replacement for the usual Test Drive Meme, in order to consolidate the chaos a bit. Though it is being posted now, timeline-wise, this shift will occur ONLY during the weekend prior to applications opening: October 30th to November 2nd, after which point characters will either disappear or become permanent residents via the application process. This also means that the rest of the event effects will have worn off, and characters will be their normal selves through the duration of this prompt.

Some ground rules for the 4th Wall event:

For characters/accounts not in-game:

• a character does not have to meet application qualifications to post to the 4th Wall Event, except in cases where there is an intent to apply when applications open. Duplicates, CRAU, AU, etc. are permitted for the event.
  
• we do ask that crack shenanigans are reasonably limited, game rules are followed, and that the event involve characters only, not players or real people.
  
• anyone can toplevel! It'll be a free for all. Go wild, have fun.
  
• characters will be given a temporary, low-tech communicator for the duration of the event with limited network access, due to limited availability of the real deal.
  
• you will not arrive with any items/companions beyond the clothes that you wear
  
• check out the Setting or FAQ pages for location details! Also, have a look at the October event log, to see what else is going on these days.

For characters/accounts currently in-game:

• players can decide for themselves at the event's conclusion whether or not memories of certain visitors remain, and to what extent; memories could become fuzzy, faces or communication obscured, they could disappear entirely, or they can remain fully intact whether the person apps into the game or not.
  
• network communications with 4th Wall visitors that don't (or can't) app in will be wiped, with the locals citing a data error related to the older communicators being used. Technology can be unpredictable, huh!
  
• any communication exchanges that you WANT to keep can remain with some discretion; for example, if a spouse visits and you happen to take a selfie with them, and they do not (or cannot) app but having that photo of them would give you comfort, feel free to keep it.
  
• Similar to the TDM, 4th wall threads cannot be used for AC or AC Reward purposes unless it is between characters already in-game.

[ Sephiroth resumes his seat at the table he so recently vacated and slides over the book on top of his teetering stack. He gives as little of his attention to his unwanted companion as possible. ]

Well, your jacket is rather nice.

[It's fine. Cats don't really need a lot of attention except when they do. Chessur is perfectly fine to just sit on Sephiroth's shoulder and look creepy with that giant grin of his.]

[ Sephiroth does not dignify that with an answer. Instead, he merely continues reading his book. Whatever this affliction is, he hopes the duration will not be long. ]

[...Ah. Awkward.]

I've, uh. Seen one, yeah.

[And he's desperately scrambling to come up with an answer as to why someone other than Angeal would have it, and nothing he can think of is good.]

[Not especially significant in the grand scheme of things, but pretty relevant to him.]

[ --Oh. Right. He's going to be staying here. Which means -

Housing. Food sources. Clothing, potentially. Everything his family used to provide, he has to look after for himself now.

As understanding sinks in, he looks a little sharper. ]

I have many practical things to do.

[ ...That's strange. He feels better when he realizes this. Why? Because it's something to think about that isn't fear?

--Maybe not just that. Maybe looking towards a concrete future is more grounding than a hypothetical one. ]

That is correct.

[ His understanding of the situation is important; his personal growth may as well have been another goal for him, but he'd have to make sure he understood the space he was in better to do so, let the rest come along as it might. ]

There are homes that are open to Otherworlders when they first arrive without a cost, so you may want to look at those, or see if anyone is looking for a roommate, as some often do. Better not to be alone... but that is your call. Otherwise money in this world... is mostly granted by how much contact you may have with another, unless you are able to find some kind of work.

You may wish to throw more than just hands at him. I have it on good authority that his deflection skills are top rank.

At least the return to wit and pun is something V feels comfortable with. He can examine his emotions later when he is alone again. Of course, he would prefer to have his usual sounding board to bounce his ideas off--even if Griffon is an unwilling soundboard at best--but he will make due.]

He is balanced. That softness my put him in danger, but he also draws strength from it.

One way or the other. That is the kicker, isn't it? They have no way of knowing what getting out of here may require aside from the bits and pieces the natives have shared. On top of that, they have no idea how long it will take.

That is the part that worries V the most. He doesn't exactly have a lot of time, though, he's felt strangely stable since arriving here.

"Perhaps if two of us speak with the natives together we can get more information?"

Everyone loves good cop, bad cop, right? And it's pretty clear just how well suited one of them is to playing the bad cop.

Her explanation draws a nod from Regis. He has not been a child for some time, but he also has no idea this woman's age or experience. Both things can greatly change a person's point of view.

Besides, he is much more interested in her reaction to his question at the moment.

"There is a young lady here who is of great importance on her world. She is someone I consider family. She also possesses a familiar much like this one," he gestures to the crystal. "I can't help but wonder if you may know of her or at least be from the same world."

I've more than a few tricks up my sleeves. [ She exposes one hand with a small flourish, showing off the thin, intricate swirl of glowing gold twirling in the air around her fingertips. ] Ranged combat requires a certain amount of creativity.

"I... suppose you both must be of a different world." She doesn't sound entirely sure of her conclusion, but it's also the only thing that seems to fit. "I am the only 'Era' of any renown in my own, though scant few know me by that name. That your Era has my concept is— It's admittedly very odd. Hyth would have told me if she requested it from the Bureau."

Regardless, he had best await my return before he decides to make any... additions to the family.

[Vergil hasn't even figured out the basics of fatherhood yet, he can't handle grandpahood on top of that.]

[Given he really didn't care who the man was, he had merely been curious about him and his origins... and given he obviously didn't seem to welcome a conversation, he might have left him be.

The fact the stranger actually knew and had used his name. Due to that simple fact, instead of departing and leaving the other in peace, he moved toward the building the other had been crouched upon.]

[ That's definitely one way to encourage people to pursue their intended mission. At his age, will he be able to get a job--

No, Ken can do this. There is a god who believes in him. He has to live up to that.

Should he look for a roommate, though? No-cost housing is nearly unheard-of to him, and very accommodating.....But is it counterproductive to be by himself.......But won't he just be underfoot in someone else's home......

But living alone might be choosing solitude because it's easier. ]

[ If he can find someone he's comfortable around, that would actually be really nice. For now, however, the sentence even feels weird in his mouth. ]

[He's seen one? Well, maybe it means that it's not commonly made.

Maybe. There is something about the guy's tone that doesn't sit well with him. And it makes Cloud more confused and nervous and it shows.]

You don't think there are others like it? [And it comes out before he can stop himself.]

Yes... your communicator should have a program which allows you to access your accumulated funds. Although you may want to see about having them replace that for you at the temple.

[ It's still a little baffling that his would not be as technologically up to standard as the rest. ]

[ Rufus either did not perceive the point Sephiroth was trying to convey or was hiding his understanding very well. Either way, Sephiroth had wasted enough time on this man and all he represented. In several short motions performed with textbook military efficiency, Sephiroth grabbed the book under their hands and tucked his notes inside. The idea of earning Dora from Rufus Shinra did not appeal to him in the slightest, nor did the thought of their combined generated energy benefitting the so-called gods somehow. ]

You'll find out, won't you?

[ Sephiroth stood without another word, leaving all the rest of his books on the table. In truth, the only reason he was taking this one to begin with was to make another point. He would drop it in the returns bin on his way out.

Sephiroth walked around the table and made his way down the rows of stacks with all the slow surety of a person imbued with confidence. ]

[ They'd do that? That's something he can ask for?

--He'd better, though, shouldn't he. If that's his primary method of communication and tracking other practical matters, if he doesn't, he might miss things. And it'd be his responsibility for not requesting a new one. ]

That's likely best.

[ Regarding their current quest, though....Ken looks around. There are no small, wandering patches of green. No one underfoot, or hiding from scary strangers (that he can see). It's just their first stop, so he shouldn't get discouraged....

And even should this search prove fruitless, giving up on himself would only make Wormmon sad. Ken can't do that! ]

[With their powers combined, they can search both high and low! And as they look, Shinji does his best to keep an eye on Ken, just to keep a watch for any other signs of distress, spiraling, anything like that. Surely this search is important, but making sure the person who is absolutely here right now is doing okay is much, much more so.

Shinji will take the lead on going out of his way to ask any passing robots if they have seen a small, green, ten-legged friend, but not a single one of those lines of questioning leads to anywhere at all. That's. Hm. Not encouraging. He doesn't want to give up the search if Ken's willing to keep looking, though, but perhaps constantly throwing oneself at a pursuit with what feels like shrinking prospects is an endeavor best broken up a bit.]

No luck here, [they could move on to the next spot, but he does want to toss out an offer first - ] Let me know if you want to take a break for a little bit, okay?

[ Ken shakes his head. ] I can keep going.

[ And he does seem - sharper, now, if in a grimmer way. He's made sense of the world, as much as he can in the moment, and knowing where his feet are planted helps him walk forward. ]

Let's move on.

Oooh~~!! I bet you're a really great writer, though!

[She looks thoughtful.]

Mmmm, maybe young people just don't like reading newspapers...?

It used to do better, but you might be onto something. You'd think they'd want to be informed about the student council president election, but a number of students would rather fight each other than read.

[ He sighs. It doesn't help that the headmaster incites some of the conflict. ]

You do?

[Zack shrugs. What is he supposed to say? "I think you stole that from my mentor"? He really, really doesn't like the implications, and it doesn't make a great first impression on either part.]
