don't stop coming and they don't stop coming [closed]

A few days ago, Kaito had been alerted to the presence of a very large hill that had suddenly sprung up fully formed north of the city proper--wow, weird huh? Had he seen it? Might be some neat stuff up there! At the very least there appeared to be trees. Probably an interesting spot to go check out!

He was forbidden from checking it out. Do not approach that hill, young man.

Until today, when the hill ban was lifted and he was cheerfully bullied into loading up the bike with Shinji and Kyoko and some provisions he had been forbidden from helping to prepare, and directed to drive out into the countryside. Once they actually got to the hill, it might be hard to keep driving--were there any roads up there at all?--but it surely wouldn't be too much of a hardship to go on a little hike on this warm summer's day.

After helping himself to some ample looks of everyone's ruffled hair--very cute, agreed-- Kaito went ahead and plopped himself down in that spot that had been made for him. What a nice tent this was. Just big enough for all of them, but not so big that they could truly go too far away on their own. A very ideal amount of coziness.

"I dunno what you're talking about, nothing's interrupted." A prime example of how nice it was that they were so close was how easily he was able to reach over and settle a hand over each of theirs. "It hasn't stopped being a really good birthday."

"Watching the sunset was interrupted," he counters gently, twisting his hand under Kai's in order to give it a small squeeze. But, besides that... "We still got to do a lot... so if you're still having fun, then I'll call today a success."

There was a tiny blush when Kaito's hand covered hers, but Kyoko nodded along with Shinji's points. "I guess we still have a shot at the sunrise, if we don't sleep in... it would have been nice if we could look at the stars too, though." But if Kaito was happy, there could truly be no problems today. "Well, if nothing else, the bug hunt can surely resume tomorrow as planned."

Ah, the stars would have been nice. That was true. Still, it was hard to feel disappointed with their hands in his. "Mm, yeah we'll still be able to check the lure out." Hopefully it wouldn't all be washed away, the branches had seemed wide enough to provide plenty of cover. "And we could pop the door open and watch the rain for a while if we wanted."

Please stay put as best you can, bug food!

"That could be relaxing..." Not quite the same as a sunset or a starry sky, but charming in a different way. Even if they open up the door again, the overhang on top of the tent should keep them dry, so... he peeks over to Kyoko, "What do you think?"

Oh--a cute idea. And it wouldn't be bad to catch a breeze, right? Kyoko nodded, perking up a little more as she scooted in closer to Kaito. "I don't know how well we'll be able to see a night rain," she cautioned, but she was still smiling. "But it sounds nice anyway."

"That's that then," he said with a little grin.

Give him just a second then, don't go scooting away just yet. He was just gonna pop forward to roll their door up a bit, cautious at first in case the breeze was blowing the rain their way. It looked like a pretty straight down affair though, so he just needed to tuck that up and... there. One rainy visage, the last trails of sunset coloring some of the sky. They wouldn't last too long, but the twinkling lights from the city beyond them would probably persist longer.

He settled back in to his spot between them, leaving plenty of leeway for anyone looking to scoot back in close. "This looks pretty good too."

Seeing the sunset beyond the rain, not completely obscured by the clouds dropping that water down on them, really is something... Shinji lets his hand carefully slip back on to Kai's once the other boy's returned to his spot.

"It does look good," he agrees softly. "If we can't watch the sunset normally, this is pretty nice alternative."

Kyoko took that unspoken invitation to scoot back in close, leaning gently against Kaito's side and tucking an arm behind him. Even if she hadn't wanted to, this was clearly the best spot to take in the view--a nice excuse, anyway.

Humming her agreement, she added, "And the sound is extra nice, too. I could almost go to sleep already."

There we go. Hands warm in his with comforting weights at his sides. Compared to last year, it was perfect. Everyone was right where they wanted to be. There was nothing Kai's heart had to hide. He could give both their heads a smooch right now if he wanted! How wild. Even if the reality wasn't perfect, there was enough good flowing that Kai was able to be hopeful about it all. Those heavy hearts didn't need to be alone. Kai gave Shinji's hand a warm squeeze.

"Almost," Kai chuckled softly as he curled his other arm around Kyoko. "How convenient that we're so prepared. Both of you made sure of that. I'm... really glad I'll get to wake up with both of you."

Nobody's alone right now, just warm hands and arms and company. No heavy thoughts haunting anyone, either, not when the atmosphere is so cozy. Mmm... yeah. This is definitely as perfect as they could get, huh? That's good, that's good.

"An extended birthday present, kinda." Shinji offers with a small laugh. "Better than how it went down last year, too." No sleepless, worried nights surrounding it, no bone-deep exhaustion. Everything on their own terms.

"It is an improvement over last year, but it's not like we planned this because it would be a sleepover," Kyoko was quick to clarify as she tucked herself closer in the curve of Kaito's arm. "It's just the logical conclusion of a camping trip."

That little laugh was a treat all its own. Kai knew it was all still kind of awkward for various reasons, but it was a definite step towards something really nice. (And it was already very nice.)

It was Kai's turn to laugh though. "That's true, s'just kinda what happens on camping trips." One more thing to add to the list of what to anticipate if Kai asked them both for another one. They'd have to be ready to be cozy. To that end, Kai shifted his arm a bit more snugly around Kyoko. With a little squeeze he let go of Shinji's hand, but it was just so he could slip that arm around the other boy as well.

"I'll take it as an extra present anyway. I'm greedy."

Ahh, if there weren't a chance that Kyoko would see, Shinji probably would have cozied up to Kai's side like this much earlier. But... if it's what the birthday boy wishes, then he'll settle in to this elevated cozy position without any fuss. Sorry for any additional scandals this might cause, hopefully everyone involved can understand.

"A nice bonus," he nods slighlty, "even if that's just how camping goes."

Even Kyoko is allowing visible cuddles (after they had already happened earlier), it's fine Shinji. Will she be able to keep this calm when it is time to actually sleep? We. will see.

It is kind of a surprise to hear Shinji call sleepovers a bonus--ah, but maybe he's just speaking from Kaito's perspective? That makes more sense. This is all for him, after all. Still, it's reassuring, even if it also kicks up a strange little flutter in her belly. "Mm... it can't be helped anyway, so... it's good that you're happy with the situation."

Hopefully by then everyone would be tuckered out and they could all just be at peace. It would be fine. Probably. For now this was very good as it was. Kai let out a happy little sigh as Shinji finally cozied up, feeling perfectly content now that they were back to this. Everyone was right where they should be.

"'Course. It's the perfect combo. Everybody wins." No one had to have a lonely night, and he was able to hold both halves of his heart. Delightful. He could only wish it happened more often. "So... thank you, for that. And for today. I hope you guys had fun too."

It's a nice bonus for Kai!! Shinji, on the other hand, will surely spend his night forcing himself to not enjoy the set up even a tiny bit more than he normally might on any other night.

"I had fun," he says warmly. "Seeing you so happy is always worth it, but even besides that, it's been really nice."

Getting rained out aside, of course.

"It was fun," Kyoko agreed, nodding vigorously. "I learned a lot about bugs today! And I got to eat delicious food and see delicious sights!" Never fear, this was an objectively good experience for everyone!

Softening a bit, she went on, "And I've never sat and watched the rain like this with anyone before. I didn't know it could be so nice."

Oh no. Here he was, subject to all the fluster that normally he was trying to inflict on them. He knew that seeing someone happy was the point of making a birthday special, but hearing it so frankly said still made him blush. Geez.

It had been very exciting though, and it was more fun with both of them. Even the rain had led them to something very nice.

"Mm. It's definitely a lot better with good company."

How the turns table, etc.

"It is." Nice and comfy, no room for any of the melancholy or loneliness that might come from just watching it rain without such nice company. Gently, he lays his head down against Kai's shoulder, a nice and subtle gesture that will hopefully not prompt any prying eyes from the other side of the boy. "Thank you for letting us do this for you."

Don't worry, Kyoko definitely was not looking at what Shinji was up to or reflecting on how cute he was like that. Even if she was, she definitely wouldn't call any attention to it.

There was an extra fond little smile though as she quietly settled in more snugly.

It would have been the correct thing to reflect on though. He was very cute like this. She was too for that matter. Both of them were very cute where they were, and Kai would openly appreciate them both enough for everyone.

He hummed softly, tilting his head against Shinji's for a moment. "You let us treat you too," he murmured as he grinned. "S'only fair you get a chance to destroy me."

"Too bad picnics aren't as viable in the winter... maybe if we build igloos..." This was a joke. He wasn't going to make Shinji sit in an igloo.

That would be agonizing, but Shinji will play along long enough for the joke.

"Oh, maybe if it snows enough, we could. Make some nice, hot food to keep the inside of it toasty." Could they possibly put the kotatsu inside of one? Kai could power it if he wanted. The possibility is there (but terrible)!

"No thank you," Kyoko deadpanned gently. Yes, this was clearly a joke, but no getting any actual ideas please. "It's way too early to be thinking about that anyway. And today is Kaito's fated day of destruction, it's not right to be planning for other days."

Yeah just plug the kotatsu in, it'd be fine.

"Hohhh. Sure didn't stop you last month," Kai pointed out. He certainly hadn't been the one to start making meal plans during Shinji's day of destruction. "You started it, even. Only makes sense if we make plans for you."
