♥ December (Ranir) Event Log

December (Ranir) Event Log

As another year winds to a close, the air grows sharp with a wintery chill; the perfect weather for curling up with someone under a cozy blanket with some warm hot cocoa. To contrast the cold weather comes a distinctly festive warmth to the city itself; it's some holiday season, even if the natives still can't quite grasp what. While recovery from the recent worm-based catastrophe is still an ongoing thing, the natives are going through with the festivities as they've learned to celebrate: Decorations strung about the city are a bit haphazard and in all manner of colors both holiday-themed and simply colorful in general, the spirit and enthusiasm are certainly there.

PROMPT I: See You Next Level
people ice skating around a rink at night, lit by multicolored star-shaped light fixtures

Residents who venture past the wall to the northwest of the arena to visit the fishing pond might find an unusual sight this month: it's frozen over. This is kind of a big deal, because the city hasn't had a substantial amount of open water in- well, no one quite knows how long! It seems to have totally frozen overnight, which is definitely unusual, but hardly the strangest thing to ever happen in Havenwell. Examining the ice will find it sturdy and solid, a good 6 inches thick at minimum. It is safe to walk on, and more importantly...

Excited for a new experience after all the glum and gloom, some local metalworkers are creating skate attachments that can be adjusted for size and connected to the shoes (or the feet, in the case of the local robotic population) of anyone who wants to give skating a try. Visitors to the area will find a booth set up, occasionally manned but mostly left as a trust exercise, with a collection of these devices that are free to use. Please take as many pairs as your party requires and skate to your heart's content! As a courtesy, borrowers are asked to return the skates once they're finished with them, but if you're really itching for a pair, the booth has the equivalent of a QR code you can scan with your communicator and commission a personalized pair.

It seems that part of the city is extra cold this season, because an influx of snow has practically drowned the arena, leaving a thick layer across the entirety and high piles along the sides. Locals have cleared the entrances and done their best to keep it functional, but those wishing to use the facility might find the ground far less sturdy than usual. You can use it as extra training, or maybe just give in to the urge and have fun with it instead. Go sledding, have a snowball fight!

PROMPT II: Fresh or Frozen
a hand dragging a stick through blue bioluminescence in water, followed by someone's feet stepping into the same

Purveyors of the fishing part of the new rink might be unhappy to have lost their hobby, but hey, no one's stopping you from carving a hole in the ice and giving it a go regardless. There's bound to still be something down there, though perhaps not what you'd expect. While you're out at the lake with another person, if you should happen to look into the water through a hole or the ice itself, you might occasionally see a series of dancing lights flitting around beneath you, mysterious but innocuous. Sometimes they disappear if you stare at them too long. Sometimes they follow you. If curiosity gets the better of you, maybe you ought to try dropping a line - or a hand - in to see what it is. If you're feeling really brave and don't mind the cold, you could even take a dive in and see what's going on up close. (Funny: it's not nearly as cold as you'd expect it to be, considering the frigid circumstances.) And there's no reason to worry about the rink, either. Likely through whatever actually turned the pond to ice, any holes carved into the ice somehow manage to freeze again overnight, as though it was never broken in the first place.

Whatever method you choose, these dancing lights will swirl around hook or hands, pulsing gently, until that light bursts and manifests into something familiar. Something you've been wanting, perhaps, or something you once had and have missed dearly. Maybe something you hadn't thought about at all, but would bring you delight. You can pull it from the waters and find it intact and undamaged by the cold or the water, alive if it is a living creature, though it appears to be hibernating. Dry it off, take it home, and check on it in the morning; you will find your gift as whole and well as if you'd plucked it from wherever you'd find it back home. Do with it what you choose, it's yours now. For those who might have the clever idea to try fishing more than once, surprises may await in the form of...a waterlogged old shoe? An empty tin can? A broken fishing lure? The possibilities are as endless as the objects are useless.

For those who may not have any creature or object of note they need or want, it is also possible for fishing to produce a small crystal, faintly glowing with some form of magic. Leaving the crystal by one's bedside overnight will result in a peculiar but pleasant dream; fulfilling one's heartfelt desire. Whether it's wanting to see somewhere back on your homeworld, getting closure with someone not in Havenwell, or hang gliding off of Everest, you will be able to see your desire in a dream and awake comfortable and well-rested in bed the next day.

PROMPT III: Snow Problems
cartoonish images of dancing clouds, raining down snowflakes against a blue background

As the weather shifts to something seasonally chilly, on occasion some small patches of clouds can be seen in Havenwell--specifically, hovering over the heads of offworlders. These localized little clouds find people to stick to and follow them a couple of feet overhead to shower them with a gentle dusting of snow, so hopefully you have an umbrella handy. And while the snow can be just snow and nothing more, to others it might have one (or even several at once) effects to it.

Cheers To You: No matter how much one drinks or how they choose to mix their cocktails, they will find themselves completely impervious to the ill effects of alcohol. No hangover, but also no fun to earn it in the first place.

Hand it Over: Some with their own personal snow clouds may feel nothing odd except for a slight tingle in their dominant hand. Whether one stumbles upon the actual effect or not, it is a very simple change: the power of their unarmed punch becomes superpowered and several times stronger than normal.

Sticks and Stones: Still others may feel completely normal and go about their usual day's business with absolutely no awareness of any change but a persistent snowfall overhead. However, should they meet with anything that might ordinarily hurt, they will find that they have twenty-four hours of complete invulnerability starting from when their snow cloud latched on to them.

Time and Tribulation: Perhaps along with the slight chill comes a sudden awareness that one is a bit shorter than usual. Or taller? It would seem that yet another odd side effect of the little snow clouds is that one has aged an entire decade–in either direction, rendering them either younger or older. Luckily, the changes seem to stop at only physical…at least this time.

Thank you for this extra bit of warmth, as Shinji is already beginning to shiver from the soggy bundle in his arms. Perhaps a bit of it is nerves, really, but he tucks in closer to Kai all the same. Let's get going, then.

"That's... probably smart." What's one more piece of clothing to throw in the wash? Your sacrifice in these chilly times is appreciated, Kai.

If it was going to keep two lads a bit warmer in one go, it was a worthy sacrifice to make. “On it.” Let him just tug it off then, stepping around Shinji so he could giftwrap that dapper fellow. Sort of. Kind of. Some swaddling was definitely on the docket at least, under and over and around we go to cozy town.

“Arright. Coze factor got an upgrade. Now let’s get you home.”

Back to warm arms around boys. Here we go.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Are you lost or incomplete?)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-01-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
As Kai wraps up this penguin surprise, Shinji does his best to help out. Comfy cozy. There we go.

"Thank you," you're being incredibly helpful, Kai. And with that out of the way, yes! Let's get going! The sooner they get home, the better, probably. "Do you think... warm water would be a good solution? Since he was in cold water, that might warm him up faster?"
whenyouneedme: (004)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-01-13 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Kai tilt his head from side to side as he thought about it. That seemed like pretty sound logic? Probably? What was even the proper care for penguins, oh geez.

"Maybe?" He offered. "We can make a warm bath for him in the sink and keep an eye on him to see."
hedgehogsdilemma: (The thought is appalling)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-01-14 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
What is proper penguin care? Shinji... doesn't actually know, he only lived with Misato for so long, after all, and there weren't any times of penguin health emergencies... The vets in the city might have a decent idea of how to help? But the thought doesn't quite occur to him just yet - if Pen pen is just sleeping, then warming him up should be enough. Hopefully.

"Yeah... yeah, that's a good idea." Just keep that in mind for when they get home. "He wouldn't have showed up... if he wasn't going to be fine, right?"

Havenwell isn't that kind of place, he thinks.
whenyouneedme: (146)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-01-14 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Right." That much Kai could say confidently enough. Sure Havenwell had a sense of humor with gifts sometimes, but nothing had ever been malicious. Kai gave Shinji's middle a comforting squeeze.

"He'll be fine. He might just need a nap like I did."
hedgehogsdilemma: (As long as the room keeps singin')

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-01-14 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Like... at the temple? Ah...! That was kind of like this, huh? That's actually a very reassuring thought, something he can hold on to well enough to subdue any ripples of worry trying to overtake him.

"That's probably it." Makes the most sense out of any possibility, honestly. "And... we should be able to get him something to eat right away, when he does." Lots of fish in the replicator! A penguin buffet just a few buttons away.

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-01-18 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Definitely. We've got lots of stuff for him." They've never been more prepared for a penguin than they've been right now! How lucky. "I'm sure he's gonna be more obvious than Bug about what he needs, it's all gonna be okay."

To this day Kai still wasn't sure if the orange was actually consuming anything so. Pen Pen had him beat there.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Somewhere far away from here)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-01-25 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true, they're probably the household most capable of taking care of a penguin in all of Havenwell. And... the same could possibly be said about a pet orange, too, even if Bug is still a very mysterious creature.

"Yeah... yeah, it will be okay." Even though there's still some clear worry in his voice, he wants to trust that Kai wouldn't lead him wrong. He seems so confident in his reassurance! So! Things will probably be okay! They just have to get him home, first, and that's easy enough.

There was the low-key worry that Kai's confidence was a bit misplaced, but he couldn't afford to give it attention when he was busy being Shinji's rock. It was easy enough to say it wasn't warranted anyway, because as far as Kai could tell, the penguin really was just snoozing. It was going to be fine.

Getting home really was easy, and they were there a lot faster than the trip felt. "We could get him set up on some pillows first? I can get some water going if you wanna get something drier on."
hedgehogsdilemma: (When your castles turn to sand)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-01-31 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Dry clothes... is a very good idea. It's nice and warm inside, but fending off the residual chill from outside is going to be easier if the front of his clothes aren't soaked through with cold water.

"All right," he will do that! But while he does, perhaps wrapping their new guest up in his jacket would be a safe way to keep those pillows from also getting soggy. He carefully shimmies it off, cocooning the penguin up in it as he does, and breaks away from Kai to leave the bundle on the couch.

"I'll be back in a little bit."

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-06 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mmm, gotcha."

Very good. Go get dry. It'd be a whole lot easier to focus on birds without a whole lot of shivers going on. Kai watched him go for a moment before he turned his attention back to the penguin cocoon on the couch, briefly crouching down in front of the little guy. "We'll get you fixed up," Kai assured him-- himself? -quietly, tracing a fingertip over the smooth feathers above his beak. It was! Gonna be fine!!

So back up he went, trekking over to the kitchen to get a warm bath in the sink going. They were just going to have to take a little hiatus from dishes for a bit. Surely Kyoko would understand. There was a penguin priority here!
hedgehogsdilemma: (Our hearts littering the topsoil)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-06 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It will! Be fine! Pen Pen doesn't seem to react at all to that gentle touch, but surely he'll be fine!

Shinji makes short work of swapping out his sweater to a dry one, and swiftly returns to scoop up the penguin bundle once again. To the kitchen with the two of them to join Kai at the kitchen sink, and once he's there, Shinji quietly sidles up next to the other boy, arm brushing up against arm. Maybe if the two of them get some contact in, it will help...? He's not sure, but it's extra reassurance for himself either way.

Whenever it looks like that bath is full enough, Shinji's ready to unwrap this bird burrito.
whenyouneedme: (004)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-06 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
There was certainly no harm in sneaking in a little love and care, they knew that much. Even if it wasn't the answer, it was probably going to help more than hinder any of the scenarios they found themselves in, even if it was thawing out a penguin.

"Just kinda went warmish," Kai said as they unwrapped the bird. He'd take that coat to set off to the side. "For a gentle thaw??" What a baffling sentence.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Just a little out of reach)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-06 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's probably for the best." Going from freezing water straight to hot water sounds like it would be, how to say, quite the shock. "A gentle thaw."

Once their sleepy guest is free from his cocoon, Shinji lifts him to the sink and carefully lowers him down into the water. Pen Pen is, if nothing else, still nice and buoyant in this state, so there's no real reason to worry about him completely sinking into the sink even if it were full enough to do so. Better to keep his head above water! If this is just an extended nap, it won't do anyone any good to let him just drown in the middle of it!

"Hm..." Shinji knows he shouldn't expect results immediately, but it sure would be nice if they got them.
whenyouneedme: toniii (101)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-06 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it sure would be! That's probably not how it worked though, especially if it were anything like Kai's nap. Kaito slipped his arm back around Shinji's middle, carefully coaxing him a step or two away from the sink.

"We'll keep checking on him," Kai assured him, "make sure his water is warm and he's doing ok. I think we just gotta wait though."
hedgehogsdilemma: (The thought is appalling)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-06 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah... he lets Kai lead him back without any resistance, but he can't quite pull his focus away from the sink just yet.

"Mm," maybe... probably. He's not sure he can really put it out of mind while they do wait, though. What kind of agonizing wait are they in for? It's definitely not as worrisome as the idea of leaving Kai alone had been when he was napping, but... still. Still. "Yeah... yeah, all right."
whenyouneedme: (146)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-06 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That was fine. Expected even. It wasn't quite the same but, yeah. Still.

"We can just set up camp in here for a while so we're not far. Maybe hearing normal everyday stuff could help too."
hedgehogsdilemma: (See things the right way up)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the consideration, Kai. Shinji's not too keen on straying very far from the sink at the moment, but just hanging out nearby would definitely be doable.

"Just at the kitchen table?" As long as he's okay with sticking around here, that would work. "And... oh, we can warn Kyoko that the sink is occupied, when she gets back."
whenyouneedme: (032)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-06 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He nodded. Just at the kitchen table! A perfectly valid spot to do plenty of things, just maybe not the most cuddly sorts unless they were really determined.

"Mmm, yeah." He was pretty sure she'd find out pretty quick, but yes. They could at least frame it that this was definitely on purpose, they did not just Not Notice a penguin in their sink. "We can just do omurice tonight, cut back on dishes and stuff."
hedgehogsdilemma: (There's no happy ending)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Penguin surprises are pretty on-brand for the bird in question, but there's no reason to not warn someone if the opportunity is right there, especially if the someone in question is a good girl who doesn't deserve a fright like that. No, only warnings from boys who are willing to give heads up, as long as they're still seated at the table by the time she gets home.

"That's a good plan." Omurice is always good to have for nights where they need things to be simple. Thanks are always in order for that option, Kai. "Dishes can wait for a little while, too. If we don't get them done for a day or two, it should still be fine."
whenyouneedme: (020)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Three cheers for the boy that couldn't cook at the start of all this.

"Yeah. We'll just have to hold Kyoko back," Kai said with a little chuckle. Surely they wouldn't hit the point of squirreling them away to wash in a bathroom sink, but. Hm. Hmmm.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Letting people down is my thing baby)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't voice that hypothetical out loud, you might give them Ideas.

"Mhm, if he doesn't wake up soon." No reason to hold anyone back if the sink space is freed up, but... he knows he can't expect that to happen immediately. All he can really do is wait, and maybe cast another mildly nervous glance on over to the penguin. "Still, I really... really hope he does."

It only seems fair that things living in his world actually have the chance to live a nicer life, like what Havenwell can offer. Even if that living thing is simply a penguin.
whenyouneedme: toniii (081)

[personal profile] whenyouneedme 2022-02-07 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Penguins deserved a nice, easy life too. Especially ones that seemed to matter so very, very much to his boyfriend. Kai never said he wasn't biased.

Kai followed Shinji's gaze over to the sink, frowning gently before he snuck a solid smooch against the side of the boy's head. "It'll feel longer than it is, probably." He couldn't promise that it would be a short nap, but the illusion of time was a safer thing to say.
hedgehogsdilemma: (Don't act like you're not impressed)

[personal profile] hedgehogsdilemma 2022-02-07 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa - hey! Shinji reaches up to lightly touch that spot that got smooched, letting the simple act pull him somewhat out of his own head.

"I know, I know," Kai's nap definitely felt like an agonizingly long wait, longer than it truly was, and this... well, the emotional stakes aren't nearly as high here, but still...! Still, he wants this to go well. Give this penguin a second chance. "I'll try... to not worry too much. It probably seems kind of silly."
