♥ December (Ranir) Event Log

December (Ranir) Event Log
As another year winds to a close, the air grows sharp with a wintery chill; the perfect weather for curling up with someone under a cozy blanket with some warm hot cocoa. To contrast the cold weather comes a distinctly festive warmth to the city itself; it's some holiday season, even if the natives still can't quite grasp what. While recovery from the recent worm-based catastrophe is still an ongoing thing, the natives are going through with the festivities as they've learned to celebrate: Decorations strung about the city are a bit haphazard and in all manner of colors both holiday-themed and simply colorful in general, the spirit and enthusiasm are certainly there.
❥ PROMPT I: See You Next Level

Residents who venture past the wall to the northwest of the arena to visit the fishing pond might find an unusual sight this month: it's frozen over. This is kind of a big deal, because the city hasn't had a substantial amount of open water in- well, no one quite knows how long! It seems to have totally frozen overnight, which is definitely unusual, but hardly the strangest thing to ever happen in Havenwell. Examining the ice will find it sturdy and solid, a good 6 inches thick at minimum. It is safe to walk on, and more importantly...
Excited for a new experience after all the glum and gloom, some local metalworkers are creating skate attachments that can be adjusted for size and connected to the shoes (or the feet, in the case of the local robotic population) of anyone who wants to give skating a try. Visitors to the area will find a booth set up, occasionally manned but mostly left as a trust exercise, with a collection of these devices that are free to use. Please take as many pairs as your party requires and skate to your heart's content! As a courtesy, borrowers are asked to return the skates once they're finished with them, but if you're really itching for a pair, the booth has the equivalent of a QR code you can scan with your communicator and commission a personalized pair.
It seems that part of the city is extra cold this season, because an influx of snow has practically drowned the arena, leaving a thick layer across the entirety and high piles along the sides. Locals have cleared the entrances and done their best to keep it functional, but those wishing to use the facility might find the ground far less sturdy than usual. You can use it as extra training, or maybe just give in to the urge and have fun with it instead. Go sledding, have a snowball fight!

❥ PROMPT II: Fresh or Frozen

Purveyors of the fishing part of the new rink might be unhappy to have lost their hobby, but hey, no one's stopping you from carving a hole in the ice and giving it a go regardless. There's bound to still be something down there, though perhaps not what you'd expect. While you're out at the lake with another person, if you should happen to look into the water through a hole or the ice itself, you might occasionally see a series of dancing lights flitting around beneath you, mysterious but innocuous. Sometimes they disappear if you stare at them too long. Sometimes they follow you. If curiosity gets the better of you, maybe you ought to try dropping a line - or a hand - in to see what it is. If you're feeling really brave and don't mind the cold, you could even take a dive in and see what's going on up close. (Funny: it's not nearly as cold as you'd expect it to be, considering the frigid circumstances.) And there's no reason to worry about the rink, either. Likely through whatever actually turned the pond to ice, any holes carved into the ice somehow manage to freeze again overnight, as though it was never broken in the first place.
Whatever method you choose, these dancing lights will swirl around hook or hands, pulsing gently, until that light bursts and manifests into something familiar. Something you've been wanting, perhaps, or something you once had and have missed dearly. Maybe something you hadn't thought about at all, but would bring you delight. You can pull it from the waters and find it intact and undamaged by the cold or the water, alive if it is a living creature, though it appears to be hibernating. Dry it off, take it home, and check on it in the morning; you will find your gift as whole and well as if you'd plucked it from wherever you'd find it back home. Do with it what you choose, it's yours now. For those who might have the clever idea to try fishing more than once, surprises may await in the form of...a waterlogged old shoe? An empty tin can? A broken fishing lure? The possibilities are as endless as the objects are useless.
For those who may not have any creature or object of note they need or want, it is also possible for fishing to produce a small crystal, faintly glowing with some form of magic. Leaving the crystal by one's bedside overnight will result in a peculiar but pleasant dream; fulfilling one's heartfelt desire. Whether it's wanting to see somewhere back on your homeworld, getting closure with someone not in Havenwell, or hang gliding off of Everest, you will be able to see your desire in a dream and awake comfortable and well-rested in bed the next day.
This is a regain event! One regain is allowed per character, and it can be anything (within reason) that would fit within the Item Regain: Medium (100 point) category on the Activity Rewards page. Like with AC Rewards, regains must be approved by mods prior to regaining them, so please use the form below and comment to the Regain Request thread.

❥ PROMPT III: Snow Problems

As the weather shifts to something seasonally chilly, on occasion some small patches of clouds can be seen in Havenwell--specifically, hovering over the heads of offworlders. These localized little clouds find people to stick to and follow them a couple of feet overhead to shower them with a gentle dusting of snow, so hopefully you have an umbrella handy. And while the snow can be just snow and nothing more, to others it might have one (or even several at once) effects to it.
Cheers To You: No matter how much one drinks or how they choose to mix their cocktails, they will find themselves completely impervious to the ill effects of alcohol. No hangover, but also no fun to earn it in the first place.
Hand it Over: Some with their own personal snow clouds may feel nothing odd except for a slight tingle in their dominant hand. Whether one stumbles upon the actual effect or not, it is a very simple change: the power of their unarmed punch becomes superpowered and several times stronger than normal.
Sticks and Stones: Still others may feel completely normal and go about their usual day's business with absolutely no awareness of any change but a persistent snowfall overhead. However, should they meet with anything that might ordinarily hurt, they will find that they have twenty-four hours of complete invulnerability starting from when their snow cloud latched on to them.
Time and Tribulation: Perhaps along with the slight chill comes a sudden awareness that one is a bit shorter than usual. Or taller? It would seem that yet another odd side effect of the little snow clouds is that one has aged an entire decade–in either direction, rendering them either younger or older. Luckily, the changes seem to stop at only physical…at least this time.

Louis | ota
But the jagged streaks he leaves in his wake suggest to him that he's upset his center of mass. There's nothing to grab onto out here, and no amount of combat experience is enough to compensate for his misplaced sense of balance. His inexperience on the ice catches up to him like a bad dream a mere few shaky yards in before he can correct it—and down he goes, just like that.
Louis all but throws himself behind the nearest skater mid descent. The shrill sound of blade scratching at ice pierces the air as he falls at an angle, and then he's splayed out on his back on the frozen floor, looking apologetically up at the skater he nearly walloped with rental skates.]
Sorry, I couldn't stop myself.

Shinji Ikari | ota
Ice skating isn't something Shinji has... well, any experience with. His world didn't get cold enough for outdoor rinks, and indoor ones weren't anything that appealed to him in the first place. Murmurings of a frozen-over pond making a fun destination don't escape him, but he just really doesn't find the idea to be too interesting on its own. It's cold. He's never skated before. Who'd even go with him...?
Ah, well, that last part gets covered pretty quickly, actually. There is at least someone (if not a pair of someones) willing to coax him out that way these days, and if he's there, then he may as well try? to skate? He's not doing great, but at least he's bundled himself well against the cold, possibly more well than one would think to normally, and that's going to help cushion him from the many slips and spills he's going to take while trying to get used to this.
"Whoa-!" Down he goes! Possibly on to the hard ice below, or possibly on to another skater. Sorry, he's sorry, he's terrible at this...!
II
You know what's way easier than trying to balance on thin blades on a slippery surface? Ice fishing. Way easier. Also not something Shinji finds himself necessarily drawn to, but between seeing other people giving it a shot, and the fact that it doesn't involve slipping and sliding around while he's out here, it doesn't feel like a wholly unpleasant idea.
Those dancing lights don't go after his borrowed lure right away, and there aren't any fishy bites either, but there's something kind of interesting and relaxing about watching whatever those lights are swirl around. He doesn't much mind just kind of letting that happen.
It's still very cold, though. Not a fan of that. Maybe a catch will make up for it. Until then, he'll be as patient as he can be.
Wildcard
[As the month goes on and weather gets chillier, Shinji spends less and less time outside, opting instead to stick around at home to down his mood under the toastiness offered by the household kotatsu. He can still be contacted and reached easily, but perhaps with an extra bit of melancholy on his shoulders by the very end of the year.
But if there's anything else you wanna throw his way not covered here, follow your heart! My arms are open to all of your desires, and my plurk
I
Devon is crouched over Shinji, the touch of a smile on his face giving away the fact that he's trying hard not to laugh.
"That was a pretty hard fall."
He appears completely at ease on the ice. He has a rather odd pair of skates on too, ones that might be literally made of... ice?

Such is the case of having made the choice to at least stand upon the ice in what had seemed an out of the way spot for the objective of at least learning balance, though all her prior observation of the activities taking place had not quite prepared her for the wild Shinji to round the bend in that telltale screech of skates.

Vianca [ota]
It wasn't super uncommon to see a little girl hanging out in the snow. It was just a different little girl than some of the population was used to at first glance. The long white hair and deep red eyes were striking features, and that bright pink flower was cute... and maybe a bit reminiscent of a purple flower that normally sat in the same place. Perhaps with closer inspection, keen eyed observers would notice that hey actually this new little girl looked a whole lot like that other equally little girl. How about that! Huh! Sure was a whole lot of snow following this one around.
Surprise it's Vianca and sometimes this month she was her normal Havenwell pink self, but sometimes she was the image of a Vianca that used to be. I don't have icons of her white form anymore but hey we can pretend in any prompt you want, ok.
✿ Next Level
Despite how much Vianca had spent out in the snow back home, it had truly just been that. She'd either read her books or just quietly existed surrounded by the silent blankets of white. It had been nice. It had been calming, even if it had been to forget.
She did not harbor the same feelings of wanting to be forgotten though, and she didn't have to read books all the time now. She was a rowdy girl now! Out to do rowdy activities! Things she'd never done at school! Like skating out on the frozen lake! What a very rowdy thing to do.
So here she was with blades strapped on her feet, raring to go and...
...stand perfectly still on the ice with her arms jutted straight out for balance. She was moving ever so slightly forward due to the nature of skates and the fact that a breeze could probably knock her over. There she went, millimetre by millimetre. The epitome of Rowdy Girl.
Maybe... maybe give her a push?
✿ Fresh or Frozen
There was a hole. Where it came from, Vianca did not know. She was not going close enough to truly get a good look. She did keep venturing past it though, and it always seemed like something was there. Something bright and wispy and altogether curious enough to keep her coming back to hover by the edge of the pond and look. She'd try to wander away and then she'd end up right back at the same spot. It was very curious. She wandered back off again.
The next time she came back, she was carrying the longest stick she could find overhead towards the edge of the frozen water.
✿ Petals & Pages and Wildcards
The little book 'shop' in the shopping district near Ohma's temple was of course open through out the month for all those looking for something a little warmer. Come in and warm up on a cozy couch with some coffee or tea, purchase a delightful cookie courtesy of Affurgatto. Have a cuddle. Enjoy.
Vianca could also be found at Ohma's Temple or the younger Caelum Household for any other tiny person needs. [Action tags perfectly fine!]
Petals & Pages
The quaint interior held his gaze where it could wander as he slowly approached the front counter. It soon fell on the bonsai—Cameron?—and then he lifted his head in search of the keeper. His usual attire was ill-suited for the cold, but that meant little to him; he was in no rush for warmth, so he would greet the keeper before making himself at home.

noctis lucis caelum | ota
[Noctis is at the lake, dressed for the weather and all set up with the skate attachments, but instead of being out on the ice, he's seated on a stone outcropping next to the lake and just sort of… staring intently at it, like it's some new monster and he's trying to figure out how to deal with it. Anybody want to check on him…?]
( ii: he needs a bass pro shop )
[Did someone say fishing? It was Noct, who is now fishing. He's going to be at the lake way more often than is healthy, learning the ins and outs of this new and unfamiliar version of fishing! It's a lot chillier than he normally likes, and he's definitely fishing out some weird (and pointedly not edible) catches, which have been collected in a small discarded pile at his feet. Trash, books, pieces of old electronics, weird rocks, two mismatching shoes. Anybody lost anything recently?
Despite his lack of good catches and the chilly pink flush to his cheeks, Noctis looks like he's in a pretty darn good mood, sitting up gleefully as his line bends.]
Yes, gotcha!
( iii: who doesn't love a good age shift? )
[Residents of Havenwell who've been around long enough might recognize Noctis as he's wandering the town during the occasional heavy snowfall- he may appear as a) a small boy completely dwarfed by his jacket and boots, stumbling through the snow trying to get home, or b) an older gentleman who keeps rubbing irritably at his bearded chin. Those familiar to Noctis will get a sheepish wave when he notices them, whether the recognition is mutual or not.]
( wildcard )
[Got anything else? hmu, Noctis is around. Older Noctis will also totally be fishing, so feel free to mix prompts as you please.]
wildcard as discussed
This morning, his expression is different as he sleeps: restful, a faint smile playing at the corner of his lips... and a wetness present at the corners of his eyes.
Sitting up in bed quietly, she wonders if he'll wake up on his own, or if-- should his expression turned distressed instead-- she should gently nudge him into consciousness. ]

All of the snow is absolutely amazing, and Devon is enjoying every second of it. At the moment he's busy piling up the biggest mound of snow he can create. Maybe it's a little bit childish, but Devon is only in his late twenties. Besides, his childhood was cut abruptly short. What does he care if he isn't acting his age? This is fun!
He hasn't yet decided what he's going to do with the huge pile of snow, but it's already getting close to shoulder height and equally as wide. Nobody nearby could miss it, that's for sure.
Prompt II
While those on the ice rink are enjoying themselves either fishing or skating, Devon is enjoying something rather different. Did someone up there happen to catch a flicker of motion below the ice? Most who glance down are probably expecting to see the dancing lights that keep appearing now and again, but this time they won't. Instead they'll see Devon, swimming around beneath the ice and looking up at them like it's nothing. The beaming smile on his face clearly says he's not drowning, but what normal person can swim under the ice without any problems? Yeah, you might very well flip out and decide he needs rescuing anyway.
Prompt II
Still, Louis' breath hitches when he peers down at the ice and notices a person facing him in the water. Upon crouching down and finding that person's expression to be nondistressed, he expels the next breath he was holding as he splays his hand out on the icy floor, though he doesn't appear any less baffled than before. Why . . . ? He isn't sure if he's supposed to do something.

Had Kyoko ever done it before? Absolutely not. Had she fawned over every ice show she caught on TV since she was tiny? You bet. But did that translate to any form of skating skill now?

Cheers to You UNO REVERSE
[ Sure was nice that Insomnia 2.0 was open again, right? Thanks Prompto and Ignis! Havenwell once again had a spot to settle in and partake of all those delightful beverages you might miss from home. Truly a comfort in these trying times.
Except... you weren't... getting drunk? Not even a buzz. Not even a little.
What's worse, your waitress Kyoko was more concerned with tending to the snow accumulating from the cloud you brought in than your sober woes. She'd flit about with brooms and mops, wipe down your table as many times as needed, even prop an umbrella over your head if you didn't have one of your own--but no help with the alcohol situation. What gives, right? ]
General
[ In the days leading up to the 25th, Kyoko will be making the rounds to find everybody she's on friendly terms with--whether it's a visit to your home or workplace, or she flags you down in the middle of the street. Wherever the ambush occurs, her target will be given a modest little box packed with sweets--matcha checkerboard cookies, shortbread sandwiches filled with caramel, strawberry thumbprints, cigarette cookies, chocolate-dipped candied orange peel and ginger, and sesame brittle. If your name is Hummy, chocolate will be absent from the box, and if your name is Cliff, your box will be left out conspicuously on the kitchen counter at her house--but regardless, there would be no escape for anyone. ]

OPEN (sort of!)
One of the natives was kind enough to offer him a huge coat when they saw him shivering - which he took and it's now one of his treasures - but it's too late and eventually Kaworu starts to feel what is like to have a human body: his throat hurts and his soft voice is a lot rougher now. His nose is stuffed and he keeps sneezing and coughing. And of course the fever makes him sluggish and tired.
He doesn't like this at all.
And Kaworu may be inhuman in many ways, may talk about things no one his age would, but he is still 14 years old and has no idea how to take care of himself. At least Kaworu learned to take refuge inside one of the coffee shops, sitting at a table wrapped in an oversized coat, with a cup of warm water (his own request, yes), while he nods off from time to time.]
[ooc: a small little prompt for whoever would like to take care of sick Kaworu. I'm limiting this to one person only, and the first who tags will be that one person. Feel free to tag it even if you have tagged the other prompt!]
Hello hello, I'm jumping in but will probs play out after the other thread(s)
...Kid?
[There's Kaworu. But, today, he's looking completely unlike he's ever seen the boy before. Bundled up and hunched, sleepy and sick, this is not a Kaworu who's doing well. He makes his way to the table and reaches out to touch the boy's shoulder, giving a light squeeze.]
Hey. Kid. Are you okay? You don't look good. Do you need help?
Oh hi~ that works!

Fresh or Frozen
When he'd heard people were pulling old treasures from the lake, he hadn't actually expected much. Of course, he went to check it out, but all in all, there aren't too many material things he longs for that don't require extra pieces-- the things for building an ofrenda, photos, a record player and all the records he'd like with it. Color him surprised when the gods know better.
Or color him very snug and warm when, the next day, he's bundled up in a grungy-looking sweater, what may or may not be faint stains of blood on it in various places, hands tucked in the front pocket, looking pleased with himself. Oh yes, he is very warm. The snow is pretty and all, but he's never been one for cold. (Not that he'll turn down any impromptu snowball fights.)
Snow Problems
That sweater may as well be a tent now. It took one shiver down his spine, and the next thing he knew, it was harder to see into the shop windows he was passing. Worse still, the shoes that
Nekane had forced him to gethe'd gotten are now much too large. Everything else seems to have become the old rags he used to wear. He supposes he should be thankful for the sweater.Well, tis the season. Hope everyone enjoys an eleven-year-old street urchin running up to them, shoes tied together by their laces and swung over his shoulder, too-tall cane lifted, shivering and asking-
"P-Perdóname. I n-need to find kid's shoes. Do you know where to look?"

Ardyn Lucis Caelum | ota
[How did he get into these situations, exactly? For someone who hadn't even seen snow before coming to Niflheim, Ardyn's balance on ice skates was surprisingly steady. Moving around, on the other hand, was proving a little more difficult. So maybe he was just sort of...shuffling a little in some vain attempt to get any semblance of momentum.]
[...And he may have been considering summoning a sword to push himself forward. Just, you know, as a last resort.]
[iii; chronology is bullshit anyway]
[Thank the gods he'd always been fairly tall. His clothes fit a little more loosely than they should have, but at least he didn't have to find new ones.]
[A lanky twentysomething-year-old shook light snowflakes out of messy auburn hair, squinting up at the snow cloud over his head in faint annoyance. Well...actually, this wasn't that bad. It wasn't the first time, after all.]
[...It was actually kind of cold out, wasn't it? Maybe he'd see about getting an umbrella and finding someplace a little warmer.]
[x; wildcard]
[elsewhere around town, adult/young, whatever you want, i'm good for anything]
i
Of course, superwolf being there actually means that Ardyn is getting a quick shove from behind as Cliff jumps onto his back legs and uses his front paws to push. He's not gentle about it, but it's not like he wants to make the guy fall immediately. All the panicked slipping and sliding about was the fun part! Move, move, move.]

[Are you enjoying the ice? Having a nice time fishing, or skating around, having a merry time? Chasing those lights beneath the surface?
Well, there's Lup floating up towards the surface beneath you, making rather urgent faces, pawing against the ice like she's drowning. How did she get down there!? You'd better think fast before she ~dies~...]
( ii: fae folk are also dangerous, actually. )
[Suffice to say she didn't drown. This month, around the lake or the town itself, Lup is wandering with a new friend perched on her shoulder, a faerie dragon about the size of a kitten, its scales the colour of autumn, all reds and oranges. When it's not perching, it's flying around her, chittering some indecipherable nonsense, though she looks amused enough that it's hard to tell if she understands.]
No, no, I'm telling you, you can only use Euphoric Breath on people once a day, or they'll get pissed at you.

honerva | ota
[ The frozen lake seems to be everyone's interest in the wake of all that's happened previously, and after all the clean up efforts and information gathering, she acquiesces into spending some time down there as well. She'll put together a nice tunic and legging combo while considering the skates. She's not going to have to do this alone, is she...? Lup seems to have disappeared under the water.
Well eventually she'll get sorted, help or no -- lots of observing before trying something out. The woman might have poise, but this is fairly new. Or maybe someone will actually go to her for help instead once she's seemed to have gotten it. Or are they going to go fishing instead? That's also new. ]
( iii. it's candlenights )
[ Although rather more specifically, while Affurgato is open for the week of the 18th or so to celebrate Faerun's holiday, one of those days would have been selected for Honerva's birthday, since she and Lup have their own tradition to uphold. Some might remember how that went last year. This time, the 22nd is the birthday choice.
Honerva shouldn't really be working for her "birthday", but... well, she can't really help herself sometimes, she’s here, checking around to see if something needs doing is second nature if someone else hasn’t offered. Though if she hasn't seen a friend yet for "Candlenights" she will make a point to give her gifts to them. The closer one is to her the more personalized of course, mostly stylized trinkets or accessories she had a hand in making herself.
Otherwise she's mingling, really -- she just doesn't like too much attention... wait, is it snowing indoors...? Maybe she does look a little younger for someone celebrating a "birthday". ]

Clifford Norman/Some Big Dog (ota)
[Need an excuse to get out on the ice? Now you don't! There's a young wolf with red fur running around being a menace, either carefully stealing a scarf, glove, hat, or something carried and running on ahead to wait for his target to come retrieve it, or shouldering someone just enough to get them from safe ground to slippery. He doesn't otherwise touch anyone, or seem at all willing to let someone get too close. His claws clatter easily on the ice, keeping him steady on his paws and digging at the lights and shapes beneath the surface, if it seems like the other person could be more curious about that than revenge.
If one of his victims is getting too genuinely upset or risking injury, though, the wolf graciously pads back over to get them steady again before accompanying them back off the ice. He's not interested in hurting anyone, just maybe their pride and definitely their patience.]

farrah | ota
[Ice-skating relies on balance and speed, just like cheerleading-- and if she moves fast enough, it's almost like she's flying again. So it isn't uncommon at all to find Farrah at the rinks, easily identifiable by her trademark braids and the jacket that's definitely adult-male-sized, on a tiny girl. She whizzes around, laughing loudly, even trying some tricks-- or just laughing at anyone who falls.
She's not a complete monster, though. If you're not catching her doing tricks, she might just approach-- and ask:]
Need some help?
II. Some things are better off forgotten
[After she nearly fell into the water trying to fish the glowy-thing out of the water, Farrah can be found to be oddly demured. She sits on a bench cross-legged, with her legs pulled to her chest under that too-big jacket of hers.
She's got her cellphone out, and she's swiping through everything in it. Occasionally, you can overhear a video clip she's watching-- a marching band, then screams, then laughter-- then she's back to the photos again.
She's too cool to cry. But when she looks up, and glares at whoever dares come near, her eyes might be a little watery.]
What do you want? [...she doesn't look very threatening.] It's mine. Go deep sea diving for your own, if you want something.
II
I will.
[Whether he already has or not isn't important. His voice is gentle as he looks from Farrah's face to the phone in her grasp.]
Is that what the lights gave you?

Dorothy Pratt | Fallen London | (mostly) OTA
There was something nostalgic about fishing for Dot, though ice fishing was a bit new to her. She’s bundled up and sitting out on the pond, one hand cupped around a steaming mug and the other diligently holding a fishing rod. She’d brought a large thermos (modern technology is so convenient!) of mulled wine for the occasion because of course she had. She smiles as you approach. There’s an extra mug and an open spot in the ice beside her if you feel so inclined to join her for either activity.
2B. Pulp and fiction (closed to
Notebooks. The crate she had fished up had contained four beautiful, pristine notebooks. Dot knew immediately who she had to inform of this discovery - someone who would appreciate these as much as she did.
It is mid-day by the time she sets out across town to Petals & Pages, wrapped up in a heavy coat to combat the cold and carrying a basket full of goodies. She knocks gently against the shop’s door before stepping inside.
“Good afternoon! Vianca, are you busy?” she calls out cheerfully.
3. Alcohol and experiments [Network post]
Does anyone have any good wassail or winter cocktail recipes? You know, warm drinks for cold weather.
I appear to be incapable of getting inebriated. [Hey Dot it’s like 9 in the morning when you posted this, how did you find this out?? Are you okay????] This is rather bizarre but also poses the opportunity for an interesting experiment: An all-out study of different alcohols where I can enjoy the flavor without repercussions!
If you have any recipes, I’d be interested in hearing them. In return, I'll teach you how to make a classic from my world, a Smoking Bishop!
