Speech?
no subject
[Nita speaks softly, but the echo returns.]
/Or at least those made by the Powers that made the khiliocosm I'm from. It's the language all Life understands, and that the universe can't help but to listen to, when wizards call out in it./
[She shakes her head.]
'Course, that hasn't always been the case lately - and if it hadn't been for a city named Nautilus, I wouldn't have seen the world outside the khiliocosm at all.
[Or so she assumes...]
no subject
What should she ask about first? ]
Have you encountered any part of creation that does not understand this Speech?
no subject
There's two ways to answer that; there've been times when wizardry's power has been stripped, and the Speech just felt like nonsense words-
[Pyra can feel Nita shudder through her handhold.]
Then there was when I answered the Call to Wake, and ended up outside the Powers' jurisdiction entirely. Some of the people I met in Nautilus didn't respond to the Speech, or Nautilus just translated it like the gods here do for everyone.
[Which held less Implications for Nita and the peridexis both.]
So, while it can't always translate context, the Speech is usually its own bridging language... until it's not.
[And the peridexis sighs. /It's not the end of the world, but it's never pleasant not to be understood./
Nita agrees with that, though as far as she's aware Pyra didn't hear Bobo's contribution.]
no subject
If she is understanding this correctly-- ] You... were in another world before this one.
[ This "Nautilis", she suspects. ] Er, besides your own.
no subject
Yeah; I was able to return home from there whenever I tried, and I thought I'd returned home for good before I turned up here.
[And her voice goes just the slightest bit sour, there.]
Still, it's better than showing up here blind.
no subject
...How long has it been for you, since you have been in your own world?
no subject
Just a few days.
[So strictly speaking this isn't the longest time she's been away from home, either - not by a long shot.]
No one seems able to get home just by willing it, here, though. From the sound of it either you get sick but stabilize or you just suddenly... disappear.
[Which was a little like going back to Sleep, admittedly, but in most cases those people had been able to give advance warning.]
no subject
And this Nautilus... world...? Was where you were before?
How was it that you were able to return home?
/smol infodump begin!
We were able to cross the Between - the 'fabric' of reality, upon which the Light solidifies possibilities from Chaos into worlds. It doesn't take too much effort to return to your own world; it's when we visited each other's worlds that we needed Anchoring.
See, there were these ranks: Dreamers, Wakened, Angelii, Ashura...
[The peridexis quietly whispers: /Deva and Aeons/]
And two higher levels: Deva and Aeons. Nautilus was an Aeon, everyone who first showed up in the city was a Wakened. Some of us were - promoted, I guess - to Angelii, then Ashura, and those two rankings could anchor the Wakened to them for traveling.
no subject
And you were able to return home at-will in that world...
[ A pause, then she asks with concern: ]
What, ah, happened, that you cannot do so now? [ Was that power taken from her, then? ]
no subject
[In certain cases, not that Nita remembers clearly, Wakened were physically repelled from the Gates...
She does remember one of those afflicted in such a way managed to Ascend and go on to explore other worlds anyway, though. Just not who it was.
Pyra's next question earns her another wry expression.]
Probably for the same reason wizardry doesn't work here; the power structure's not compatible with whatever is running this place.
no subject
...But you are not powerless here, correct?
no subject
Yeah; it's not like the Speech has stopped existing just because I'm here.
I'm still a wizard, and I can still affect change in people not from this world.
Preferably with their consent, though; the Speech is a language of persuasion, not force.
[Nita says this part with conviction; I will change no Life unless it, or the system of which it is part, are threatened.]
no subject
To what extent?
no subject
All wizards have to take an Oath. If they break that Oath - using a spell that turns out to cause more harm than good -
[Psychotropics in particular are a hot issue; messing with someone's head is wrong wrong WRONG, as the Powers respect free will too much.]
They can lose their wizardry. Which means losing their memory of being a wizard, as well. All the friends they made, how their relationships with their family changed, if at all.
A wizard has to think really hard about the ethical reasoning behind whatever spell they use, especially when it affects more than just them.

I can make a shield that can withstand a supernova, though not remotely at a close distance.
Anyone who knows the Speech can talk to other beings using it, but on that level that's still just engaging with almost any species as people.
A wizard, though, someone with enacture... We can freeze fire, burn rain, set a twisted vine straight, heal what's broken, the list goes on.
Only if we can pay the price, though; everything takes energy, and if you ask for too much...
[Nita sighs.]
That notion's relative, though; the younger you are, the more power you have to burn.
no subject
Can you, ah, ....turn one kind of matter into something else?
no subject
Breaking bonds between atoms, recreating molecules... wizards can do that, too.
no subject
...This Speech and your power.. is incredible.
no subject
Thanks.
[Her smile falls all the same, though.]
I wish it were enough to get through to these gods, though. They don't seem able to properly connect with anyone. Any good relationship should be two-way.
[Well, any healthy one.]
no subject
Whatever the case is, she's here to offer touch to help this world. She remains smiling. ] Perhaps it's best to let them slumber, while we build their strength.
no subject
Dormant, or just injured, though?
[Nonexistent gods, now that's an option... heartbreaking for the natives here, but an option.]
I don't think everyone here has that level of patience, Pyra.
[Awful lot of folks with suspicions on the Network, so far as she'd seen.]
no subject
Would you attempt to find a way to force the gods to awaken?
