♥ Who: Shinji, Kaito, and Kyoko!
♥ Where: Kai and Shinji's new digs
♥ When: Ranir 25th
♥ What: birthday? party??
♥ Rating: G probably unless Kai takes off his shirt again
Kyoko's bright mop of hair was a little more mussed than she'd like it to be for a dinner with friends, but it couldn't be helped now. She'd changed out of her Santa of the Clause uniform in a rush this afternoon, eager to put the finishing touches on her gift, and there just hadn't been time to spruce herself up at all after it finally met her approval.
Not that she expected Kaito or Shinji to mind--aah, they really were such good, generous boys. She truly was glad they'd been kind enough to invite her over tonight, of all nights.
Though it had been months now since she'd been given explicit permission to enter their home without knocking, Kyoko still never did so unless s t e a l t h was in order. So she would have knocked today even if her arms hadn't been busy carefully cradling a large, suspiciously cake-sized box.

Kyoko turned to Kaito, nodding fiercely. "Tempura, for sure!!" She would have agreed to anything, it was just amazing that there was actually a concrete suggestion coming from one of the Boys With No Preferences. Turning a bit to include Shinji, she went on firmly, "Next time, I'll make the feast! Relax and leave it to me!"
no subject
"If you'd be making something like that, though, I'd want to help...!" You can only purposefully exclude people from feast preparation on very special occasions. Kyoko's just going to have to get her dinner revenge on some other day, if Shinji has anything to say about it.
no subject
"Yeah, I said 'we.' You're gonna have to deal with having lots of help."
no subject
"No getting around it. I'll just have to ambush you."
no subject
He's gonna have to think that one over for a moment, chewing over a piece of carrot with a pensive 'hmmmmm'. Gotta keep them on their toes, huh? "We can do feedback..." That's easy enough, even if she'll probably only get heaps of praise for any effort she makes. "But you know we'll just have to keep doing the same if you surprise us, though."
no subject
Ah, well. He huffed and continued on. "And we haven't even finished surprising you tonight yet."
no subject
A little pout of her own had started tugging at her mouth, and she had been about to ask Kaito why he kept going back to deep frying--first the croquettes, and now tempura!--when he dropped that information.
"... Huh?" Blinking, Kyoko cast a fresh look around the room, strewn with all those charming handmade decorations, and landing on the sukiyaki pot again. There was even more, somehow? "But... you guys kinda went above and beyond as it is, you know?" How much more could she even accept in good conscience?
no subject
Definitely later as far as this night is concerned, anyway, what with the extra surprise in store for Kyoko. And, honestly... is it above and beyond? The idea of going all out for a birthday is still pretty foreign of a concept for Shinji, but he's not entirely sure that this particular combination of things is excessive. Maybe? Possibly. Either way,
"This is all stuff we had planned to do, though." Are they gonna just go and change their plans? When everything's set for the evening? They probably could if there was real pressure for it, but also, like. That would be such a waste.
no subject
Kai's pout had left as quickly as it appeared, a devious looking smile taking it's place. Oh dear.
"We're just following the birthday protocols you gave us."
no subject
Just thinking about it all made something warm twist in her chest, but before another lump could form in her throat, Kaito delivered another bewildering piece of information.
"Birthday... protocols?" She looked at Shinji, her one-time partner in birthday crime. "Did... I say something like that?"
no subject
"Well, for Kai's birthday, we got new ingredients, and you made him a gift, too..." The decorations hadn't been a part of the plan back then, but they were definitely in the spirit of making things festive and party-like. That seemed more Kyoko's speed as far as celebrating went, but that's also as far as Shinji knew about any protocols.
"So it makes sense that you get at least that much."
no subject
He jumped in to bolster Shinji's list, counting each one off with a finger. "Right? So really tasty food, some kinda gift, dessert, balloons and sparklers, hanging out to make it a party, and a bunch of sneaking."
There was a wiggle of his fingers in her general direction, but then he paused and glanced at the decorations again. "Ah, couldn't find balloons though. We made things up."
no subject
Her hands curled tight around her bowl as her gaze fell, eyes still big and round. "I... said a lot of things really carelessly, huh...." Had she really gone and made them think they had to do all kinds of things they wouldn't usually care about, just for her? "And you went to so much trouble, because of that?" She hadn't even noticed the steady warmth growing in her cheeks, but there was no hiding it.
no subject
But it wasn't careless of her, and it's far from them doing things they don't care about. "We just wanted to make sure you had a good birthday this year." The two of them wanted to do this because it's the kind of thing that makes her happy, they figured. It was never a pain, even if they feel differently about what lengths they'd find appropriate for anyone to go to for their own birthdays. "It wasn't any trouble."
Here, he'll even put on a smile that he hopes is encouraging, which honestly isn't that hard to do in the face of so much charming blushing coming from Kyoko's side of the table.
"Honestly, it was pretty fun, putting all of it together."
no subject
"It was real good you mentioned stuff, or at least I'd be completely clueless on where to start. I needed to get revenge, y'know?" Is what he said, but despite allusions to retaliation the expression Kai was wearing had eased back into something softer in the face of all these warm cheeks.
"It's your day, Kyoko. We wouldn't want to spend it any other way."
no subject
"I really thought... you were just letting me visit for a while before your cute cozy date night," she mumbled, filter melting away from the heat steadily engulfing her face. "I really believed that.... I was so sure."
no subject
What? Because it was Christmas?? Whether or not the thought of Christmas being a Date Night had passed through Shinji's mind prior to this, not only was it not something he would have been intent on chasing down under other circumstances, but knowing that Kyoko's birthday is today... that absolutely takes importance over pretty much anything else.
A blush still hits his cheeks, and he holds his hands up in front of himself with a defensive little wave. "No, no, no, this was all for you, from the beginning!"
no subject
Kai looked to Shinji for some kind of indication of what Kyoko could of meant by cozy date night, but instead of any sort of clarity all he found was More Blushing. More. There was so much warmth on either side of him. What was happening here. It was very charming to glance between them, but also he was confused.
He was close to blurting out 'why would we be on a date' to Shinji, but then Shinji changed the trajectory of the stupidity falling out of Kai's mouth. "Yeah. The only date night we had plans for was yours, you're not getting out of here that easy."
no subject
"D-don't," she sputtered, and then made herself go on more firmly, "don't use alternative meanings for 'date' so casually, please." He'd obviously been talking about casual friend dates, but Shinji was right there, come on! "You're not a high school girl, it's not cute. But..."
Slipping back into a mumble, she lowered her head a bit, bashful. "I think I get it now. I won't leave right away after dinner."
no subject
But, no, Shinji's not really interested in chasing down that particular subject, he's already flustered enough as it is. He gives Kai a quick glance, but honestly moving on sounds like the best option to him. "Well, that's good. We wouldn't want you to miss out on anything else we have planned."
There are at least! A couple of surprises in store still! So they'd better hurry up and get the dinner portion wrapped up, huh?
no subject
He wasn't going to be the one cycling back to it though. Upsetting her was never on his list, even without her birthday. Having a knack for it was really something he could do without.
If nothing else, they'd established that this night was all hers. There wasn't any more need to hammer it home any more than that. So he just nodded along, shoving some more food in his mouth. "Mhmm."
no subject
But he didn't press it, so Kyoko chose to interpret that as acceptance, even if he did look kinda confused. And since Shinji hadn't said anything himself, it probably wasn't her place to bring it back up. And really, it would be a shame if she let herself get too distracted from all the hard work they'd put in to give her such a lovely evening.
So she lets herself relax into a bashful little smile as she sips at her broth. "... I really do appreciate it, is all--just having a regular meal with you would have been enough to make me really happy, so.... Thank you."
