Kyoko's bright mop of hair was a little more mussed than she'd like it to be for a dinner with friends, but it couldn't be helped now. She'd changed out of her Santa of the Clause uniform in a rush this afternoon, eager to put the finishing touches on her gift, and there just hadn't been time to spruce herself up at all after it finally met her approval.

Not that she expected Kaito or Shinji to mind--aah, they really were such good, generous boys. She truly was glad they'd been kind enough to invite her over tonight, of all nights.

Though it had been months now since she'd been given explicit permission to enter their home without knocking, Kyoko still never did so unless s t e a l t h was in order. So she would have knocked today even if her arms hadn't been busy carefully cradling a large, suspiciously cake-sized box.

And so it was that both parties suspected nothing.

As often as Kai had tried to tell her to just come in, he already knew deep down that they were going to be able to expect a knock. Admittedly this was appreciated this time, since it gave them the heads up to finish their finishing touches of getting things ready to go.

Kai looked up from some of the finishing prep of attempting to make some carrot slices look pretty. Someone was at the door, dog mode activated. "Ohh, I'll get it!"

Well, well! That's probably their guest of honor for the night, isn't it? Excitement for the evening already stoked from the anticipation of it all, Shinji perks up a bit at the knock.

"Sure thing." Who wouldn't want such a cheerful dog to greet them at the door? Kai's clearly been looking forward to this ever since the idea of putting a surprise together was pitched, might as well let him get things going while Shinji wraps up the last bit of everything in the kitchen.

"I'll be finished in here shortly."

He'd definitely been looking forward to this revenge. Clearly that's what this was! He'd been committed to doing something, even if it wasn't this fancy, since his own evening and she'd confessed that her birthday got overlooked too. It didn't sit right with him then, and it didn't sit right with him now! Kai was really glad Shinji was on the same wavelength of wanting to make sure she got something special if she had to spend it here.

"Gotcha," Kai chirped, shuffling for the door with a little tousle of Shinji's hair as he went. (Not enough to really mess it up though, bro, promise.)

Let's! Get that door! Kai tugged it open, already grinning at Kyoko and her... box? A box. Box??

"Hey!" Let him move out of the way, its cold out there, come in.

Kyoko and her box! Here they are! They have arrived.

And there was a big grin for him too, bright eyes creasing over cold-pink cheeks as soon as Kaito opened the door. "Hello!!" Stepping in with a slightly softer, "excuse me~" she started the careful balancing act of toeing off her shoes without jostling the cake box too much. "Thank you for inviting me again!"

Right. That sure was a box. Considering this was Kyoko, he really wasn't surprised that she had turned up with something! It was just a mystery. Shutting the door after her, Kai held out his hands if she wanted to deposit said box there.

"Of course. It's gonna be extra tasty tonight."

In fact, now that the cold was shut out, it was much easier for the savory scents of a simmering broth to reach thawing noses. "You're right on time."

Considering the contents of that box were partly for him, it was only natural to gently plop it into Kaito's open hands. There you go sir, merry Christmas.

Kyoko had bent to line up her shoes neatly by the wall, but she let out a dreamy sigh as the cozy scents wafted out temptingly. "Ah... I could float away to heaven on that aroma...."

Box acquired. This was a little heavier than he anticipated, and yet... familiar...

Hrm.

"While I'm sure he'd be flattered, I'm sure Shinji would rather you enjoy it down here with us," Kai chuckled. "He's getting things finished in the kitchen."

"Shinji-san...!" That was a much louder sigh, joy lifting her to her feet and carrying her towards the kitchen. "His food is just more and more delicious, every time~ Aah, but if I hadn't taken so long delivering that last letter, I could have got here in time to help--sorry."

It's true, please don't ascend without enjoying the food being made first, Kyoko! It's being made with her in mind, after all! A special feast for a special day, and all that.

Hearing the warm murmur of the two of them chatting, Shinji peeks out from the kitchen to give out a greeting and - hold up, where'd that box come from...? Kyoko? Did you bring them something on your birthday? Hmm!! But, no, he's not actually that hung up on it, and he'd rather call out a quick, "Glad you could make it!" than make a remark on this mysterious box.

"You two wanna get settled? I can bring everything out in a minute."

And there he was! Kai nodded along, shooting Shinji a grin before gently herding Kyoko towards the other room. "Sure, sure... Lemme know if you need a hand!" Cuz it wasn't his birthday this time, you better let him help some more if you needed it, Shinji!

But for now: herding to Cozy Town. "We mostly planned on it this way, you're good," Kai told her as he scooted her along. "Let's get you warmed up."

Here, in this room, with that highly cozy kotatsu. Look at that surface. Check out that fluffy blanket. Pillows! On the floor!! And... paper snowflakes hanging around the room? Were those some colored paper chains draped around? Where'd those come from!

Kyoko just had time to send Shinji a cheery grin and a wave before she was being herded to Another Place. A place she in fact had been before, but it was quickly apparent that it had taken on a different flavor than the usual.

"... Is that--?" Her eyes had gone wide, sparkling with awe as her mouth fell open. Look at all these wonders! What kind of dream land had she stumbled into? "Are those--!? What--what happened?!"

Oho. Hohoho. Somebody had a very pleased look on his face in light of this reaction. He continued this very obnoxious grinning as he looked for a safe surface to deposit this mystery box for the time being. Ah, here would do.

"We just got ready for a really cozy night," he told her.

Now that his hands were free, he very gently (briefly) applied an encouraging push to her shoulders towards the Coze.

Oh Kyoko thought gently as she obligingly followed Kaito's nudge, and knelt down at the edge of that very inviting blanket. That's right. It was Christmas after all, so even though Shinji and Kaito had been kind enough to invite her over for dinner, they probably had some romantic plans for later this evening.

She'd have to make sure she didn't hang around too late.

Cheeks just tinged with pink--it could even still be leftover rosiness from the cold--she turned a sheepish grin up at Kaito. "Ah, I'm really lucky, you and Shinji are always letting me mooch off you."

Romantic was probably up for interpretation.

Up went a heavy brow as he squatted down to take a seat next to her. "Silly. S'not mooching if you keep beating us to the punch with gifts." Mysterious box gifts!

Glancing around at the attempts at decor, Kai rubbed the back of his head as his grin turned sheepish. "Neither of us are like super good at this, but we wanted to try and make it festive." For the special day. That was her day. What is christmas.

"Huh?" Gifts? Did he mean--? Kyoko flapped a hand in protest, chattering with an easy smile, "Bringing dessert every now and then is the least I can do if you're gonna keep inviting me over. But now I'm really, super, extra glad I did! Because you guys really went all out!" She honestly hadn't figured either of them for big fans of the holiday, but people sure could surprise you, huh? "It's so cute~!"

Oh. Kai's shifting gaze landed on the box again. Dessert. Yes, of course it was dessert. Kyoko was good at that! What a silly thing to be taken by surprise by. Ah. Ahh. "Aha."

When he looked back at her, his face was definitely a shade or two warmer. Clearly it had to do with the compliment, he was never good with those. He was still grinning though, because it was hard not to when she was chattering like that. "Well, yeah, course we did. It's a big day after all, so I'm glad they're to your liking, heh."

Ah, was that the rare sight of a Kaito blush? Even a motorcycle punk who didn't think anything of walking around half-naked would soften right up if you praised him a little, huh. Another cute thing to add to the list of tonight's cute things. Kyoko's grin mirrored his, warmly.

"You know," she giggled lightly, "to be honest, I kinda didn't expect you to even remember what today is at all." But he was actually really into Christmas, huh? Who knew!

Hopefully that will be a nice and extensive list by the end of the evening, but Kyoko's already being treated to some big-ticket items on said list already. How truly auspicious!

Unaware of talks of gifts and big days, dinner has been put together at long last, and arrives in a familiar sukiyaki pot couriered carefully by Shinji. "Here we go," he offers with a small 'phew!' as the meal is delivered to its destination, followed closely by enough dishes for the three of them that had been tucked safely into the crook of his arm. And nobody who had already gotten nice and cozy even had to get up to help! Perfect.

Kai was going to make a comment, you could see it on his face. What do you mean you didn't expect him to remember. Hey! You didn't even tell him properly! Gosh!

But whoa hey there was a feast. The blonde's attention was drawn to the hero of dinner, the very light protest of "I coulda helped" following that 'phew'. It was very mild though, because that grin was already back and beaming at both of them. "Shinji it smells amazing!"

Kyoko had opened her mouth to join Kaito in protesting against Shinji delivering such a heavy load of a f e a s t all by himself, but as the scent became headier with proximity and she was able to take in the sight of that sukiyaki pot, she simply forgot.

"Uwaah...!" was what fell out of her mouth instead, her wide eyes practically glittering. "Shinji-san, you--no--could it be--?!"

Ask for help? And interrupt all of these hilarious misunderstandings? I think not!

There's a part of him that really wants to dismiss that praise out of a knee-jerk reaction - there's no reason to heap any of that on him! But, no, the idea is to knock Kyoko's socks off specifically with this. So, if she's impressed, then he's gonna let her be impressed! A little blush of his own rises to his cheeks, but he does his best to keep any rebuttals unspoken.

"Hmm, hopefully it tastes as good as it smells."

With that, off comes the lid. Aroma: freed. Dinner: served. Hot: pot. Check out all that seafood, the mushrooms, carrots, leeks... a true warm and cozy feast for a warm and cozy evening.

Excuse you, buckaroo, all that praise was warranted. Kai contributed towards the cause, but he was just buying ingredients and following instructions. So Kai looked even more pleased when no protest actually happened.

"Of course it's gonna."

Gaze upon this bounty, Kyoko, still gently simmering with all of its delights. Kai motioned towards all of its beauty, saying, "You've got first dibs, Kyoko."

Look at this nice little collection of blushes she was amassing. Kyoko tucked them away in her heart to treasure. For later.

Right now was the time to swoon, or just about; hands clasped over her chest, Kyoko swayed heavily to one side before bouncing up straight again to take gaze once more upon that glorious bounty. "It's... it's so beautiful! Shinji-san!!" And she was being graced with the honor of first dibs? That made sense if she thought of herself as their guest, of course, but gosh! "Can I really!?"

She was in fact scooting up closer to the table though, finally letting the blanket actually fall over her lap as she took up a bowl with hands that almost trembled. If she argued with them about it, wouldn't the food just get cold before they could have any? It was better to just be grateful, and humbly fill her bowl with the wonders. "I know I've said this kind of thing more than once, but... you're really just too good to me! Both of you!"

So many good moments to keep in your heart, Kyoko, and so much good looking food to plop in your bowl.

As Kyoko picks over the offerings in the pot, Shinji takes his seat next to Kai, quickly tucking himself close to the table and getting warmed up right there as a smile warms over his face.

"We wanted to make sure we had a really special dinner for tonight in particular, you know?"

Considering the ~special day~, and considering that downright expressive reaction and joyous look on her face, the plan was a success. It's a relief, even if he's sure Kyoko would be more than gracious no matter what kind of meal they put together, but the two of them going the extra mile with everything was definitely a good idea if it lets them see her this cheerful.

The outpouring of cheer was definitely a good moment to tuck into their own hearts as well. Everyone was just so generous with their gifts tonight. And it really was so nice to see. Kai was also pretty sure she would have been fine with anything, but that really wasn't the point. He was sure his smile was getting a bit dopey watching. Oh no. Oh well.

Kai nudged Shinji's knee a little, making a little gesture to his bowl. Chef next, them's the rules.

"Totally. Pretty sure somebody told me it's a rule to have a really tasty meal on your birthday, after all. We had to make sure it fit the bill."
