Affurgato Mingle: December edition

What a sad, sad month November was. The local cafe, Affurgato, has been closed. However, at the start of this week, a surprise notice is sent out to all communicators:

Affurgato's open again! Come save your sorry tongues from those replicator meals. Or come pet a cat, if that's more your jam. We don't judge here, we only charge.

Also: it's Candlenights! Bring the staff a present. If we find it interesting enough, you might get something extra in your meal. What do the staff like? Well, that's your job to figure out. <3

The restaurant hasn't gone through any sort of redesign, but it is somewhat decked out more than usual; soft colourful lights line the outside, candles on every table (fake or magical, so they are cat-safe and non-flammable), and even Ditto appears to be a little more seasonal this month. Hard to tell whether or not he's okay with this, he's a tough read.

One notable difference is that Lup isn't out running front of house as much, with the kitchen more bustling now that they're down one chef. She's keeping up pretty well, but the seating arrangements have been shuffled around to make the max capacity a little lighter to maintain things if there happens to be a rush. The menu is gently simplified, but the ingredients taste better than ever, and for this week in particular, fresh turkey dinners are back on the menu, alongside a crunchy treat that is called "fried unicorn dick", but is... probably just a battered candy bar. Probably. Maybe. Who's feeling brave?

On the 9th in particular, a fresh message goes out to friends of Honerva, gently pestering them to swing by the cafe for an open mingle. And maybe you should volunteer for a little bit at the cafe, serve, assist Honerva... it's terrible for a lady to have to work on her birthday, after all. You know, if it was her birthday. Wink.

On that day in particular, every visitor gets a free slab of delicious and delicately frosted cake.

Come on over, Havenwellians! Or whatever you're called. The cats have missed you! And you've missed the food, no doubt.

It's... a different taste, though! And I definitely wouldn't be delicious as either a squid or an octopus!

Maybe we'll see. Maybe I'll add seafood to the menu and call it the Kyoko Special, and then we'll see how tasty everyone finds it.

Noo! That's not fair!! When I've barely even tasted the ocean breeze in all my years of life!

Oh shit, seriously? No oceans at all?

--Well, I did get to see one, once. But that's not enough to qualify me as a sea creature! Right?

Naming a special for you doesn't mean you are the special!

[daikonrose]

I--I knew that.

[ She did! Totally. ]

I just got carried away, a little bit.

Just a little bit.

[Forgivably so.]

All joking aside, the menu's probably a little beefy as it is with just little old me at the helm, so I think seafood can take the backburner for now.

Ah, I didn't really think you were gonna do that!

[ Or, well, that would have been her conclusion if she'd paused between dramatics to think for half a second. ]

Even for someone with amazing powers, it's bound to be a lot of work, satisfying the hungry masses.

Oh, it's loads. The demands of the adoring public can be so exhausting...

[Lup rests her hand against her forehead, sighing dramatically.]

The downside is that I'm just too good. Can't even hire an assistant chef! Who could come close to my level of quality?

[Besides... the obvious. That is no longer an option.]

Nobody, for sure. [ She's nodding, overly earnest in the way she gets sometimes where it's hard to tell if she's actually serious. ] I could certainly never understand the intricacies of a master chef's mind! Some people are really just born with the genius for it, while the rest of us can only scrub the floor and peel vegetables for them.

[necromanswers]

Well, that's not so bad. Any good chef does occasionally need an assistant to do the menial shit we don't have time for, like when we're too busy folding 100-layer croissants or painting fondant.

[daikonrose]

That's right, a true master knows when to delegate. [ Sage nod, but then she perks up again, full energy. ] If you get too short on hands, I'd definitely come clean or chop things up for you any time! I can wait tables too, if Miss Honerva needs a break!

[necromanswers]

Ooh, what's this? A volunteer? I'm not sure you fully understand the weight of that responsibility...

[daikonrose]

I understand it! [ She slaps a hand to her chest. ] I may not be able to make miraculously delicious food like yours, but I would never speak lightly of the work!

[necromanswers]

Such passion! I can't deny that you've got guts. How good are you with a knife?

[daikonrose]

I can cut, chop, and peel anything! It's my specialty! Even katsuramuki is fine!

[ Here it is, the closest she can bear to come to openly bragging. ]

Katsuwhatnow?

[Being 300 years old doesn't mean you know every food that exists, sadly.]

[daikonrose]

Ah-- [ Oh, that is extremely fair, oops. ] --sorry. It's taking something like a daikon radish or a carrot, and peeling the whole thing round and round into a super thin sheet. It's not very relevant most of the time, now that I think about it.
