Affurgato Mingle: December edition
♥ Who: Open to all
♥ Where: Affurgato
♥ When: This week
♥ What: A grant reopening of the best restaurant in town!
♥ Rating: probably PG/13ish?
What a sad, sad month November was. The local cafe, Affurgato, has been closed. However, at the start of this week, a surprise notice is sent out to all communicators:
Affurgato's open again! Come save your sorry tongues from those replicator meals. Or come pet a cat, if that's more your jam. We don't judge here, we only charge.
Also: it's Candlenights! Bring the staff a present. If we find it interesting enough, you might get something extra in your meal. What do the staff like? Well, that's your job to figure out. <3
The restaurant hasn't gone through any sort of redesign, but it is somewhat decked out more than usual; soft colourful lights line the outside, candles on every table (fake or magical, so they are cat-safe and non-flammable), and even Ditto appears to be a little more seasonal this month. Hard to tell whether or not he's okay with this, he's a tough read.
One notable difference is that Lup isn't out running front of house as much, with the kitchen more bustling now that they're down one chef. She's keeping up pretty well, but the seating arrangements have been shuffled around to make the max capacity a little lighter to maintain things if there happens to be a rush. The menu is gently simplified, but the ingredients taste better than ever, and for this week in particular, fresh turkey dinners are back on the menu, alongside a crunchy treat that is called "fried unicorn dick", but is... probably just a battered candy bar. Probably. Maybe. Who's feeling brave?
On the 9th in particular, a fresh message goes out to friends of Honerva, gently pestering them to swing by the cafe for an open mingle. And maybe you should volunteer for a little bit at the cafe, serve, assist Honerva... it's terrible for a lady to have to work on her birthday, after all. You know, if it was her birthday. Wink.
On that day in particular, every visitor gets a free slab of delicious and delicately frosted cake.
Come on over, Havenwellians! Or whatever you're called. The cats have missed you! And you've missed the food, no doubt.

Ken | ota
He feels bad about waiting. Now it's the 9th already - but the important thing is that he's here. Which means there's nothing to do but open the door and see how this goes. ]
Hello...?
no subject
In any case, as much as others are assisting here and there for the -- unspoken event of the day, he's still someone she recognizes, and makes her way toward when she has a chance. ]
... Greetings, Ken. Are you well?
no subject
[ Ken nods. The wings came off, for one thing, and he's getting along with his roommate....he thinks. She is an effusively affectionate person, and he isn't opposed, just unused to it.
Still, overall: ]
Settling in is going smoothly.
[ He has even HELD A FEW MORE HANDS. It's amazing. ]
no subject
[ The fact that he wasn't on his own seemed the main thing, at least. Though as far as settling in went... surely he was here for another reason, right? ]
Where would you like to sit? You may look around a little more if you prefer.
no subject
[ He looks around anyway, though, as if he's going to figure out a different answer. And. Hm.
Why do all the other customers have the same cake? ]
...Is something happening today?
no subject
[ It's weird to be the one to declare that it's something potentially for "herself", after all, even if something in her tone suggests that it might be something more. She'll guide him over to a nice spot where he could get a good view of the area, because she has noticed, he is observant and might benefit from seeing more. ]
no subject
[ Is it all, though? Something about the way she said it...
But he's not going to push the point when she's being so good as to find him a table. It's pretty in here, with all the lights. He suspects he sees why she likes working here.
(Though, why cats, somewhere that serves food? He's never fully gotten that back in Japan, either.) ]
no subject
Indeed it is. We are also honoring Candlenights, which is representative of a winter holiday of sorts from a world called Faerun. Some small indulgence on our part.
[ And really -- she can't quite explain it further anyway. Her sentiment for it has far more personal stakes. It still doesn't have anything additional to do with that cake, however, though it might explain some of the candle decorations about.
She waits for him to settle in, making sure he has a menu available. ]
no subject
[ From the innocence with which he asks the question, he hadn't been involved in the planning of Today's Particular Event. He just can't help but notice it isn't on the menu....
It looks like something his mother might make, so it's jumping out at him. ]
no subject
[ Goodness, he is perceptive, isn't he? And she's... already had a number of surprises today, that cake being one of them right down to the garnishing. Her ears flutter a little. ]
Well... yes, and no. It is a... very special complimentary offering today. Something I am quite grateful to share with those visiting.
no subject
[ He arrived the day of a special? This sort of thing rarely happens to him. Is it wrong to want to take that as a good sign?
Ken smiles. ] Then, I'd like to try it. And...whatever tea goes best.
no subject
As it is, it is just nice to see people here, even if she's not strictly supposed to be doing too much work today. But Ken is familiar and someone she wants to help settle in, so she's making that effort.
... And honestly she's not certain what tea goes best with it given it's something new by all accounts, but the person who put it together might have a suggestion there. She'll make a note of it to ask. ]
You're more than welcome to, then. Is there anything else you'd like to try?
no subject
[ Though, if it turns out the sugar does what he's read sugar can do and spurs his appetite... ]
May I keep this menu?
[ Someone may be here mostly to see you, Honerva.
He doesn't even know it's your birthday! ]
no subject
[ The fresh turkey dinner (including fresh slabs of turkey and stuffing, flavoured with bacon grease) seems to be the specialty on the week, but the menu has the rest of the faire for this particular month as well, and some of the usual standbys.
She can certainly understand needing more time with it, but there's the chance something might stick out at him. Maybe just the puns. There's lots of them. ]
I'll call for your tea while you settle, and get you a slice.
[ If she's not accosted on the way by someone trying to get her to take a break. Though perhaps a furry companion might show up to peek at him. ]
no subject
[ Ken looks at the menu some more. Turkey....Has he ever had turkey before? He can't recall. Chicken, absolutely; beef, on fairly regular occasions (if mostly in its ground form). Turkey hasn't taken off in Japan, though.
This could be an opportunity. But it also sounds rather heavy. (Bacon grease?)
He's pondering the merits and demerits of this option when something lashes against his leg, gently. He looks down and finds - a tail. Whose owner is looking up patiently.
Order the turkey. And then feed it. ]
--Ah.
no subject
Which cat is peeking up at him there? RNG says it's Harmony, a sweet cat with distinctive features, though it is not as though all the cats here aren't distinctive in some way...
Either way, the cat will gently trying to draw more of his attention by slowly rubbing his leg. A bid for attention. ]
no subject
Except, this is something cats do when they want something from you, don't they? Wormmon has been known to nuzzle his ankle, as well. In his partner, it's a sign of affection. But he just met this cat.
Ken has seen people offer cats their hands first, so he does this for Harmony. Hello.
Can he...do something for you? ]
no subject
Harmony will take her time with him, and rubbing up against his leg for some general attention, while Honerva graciously has her attention pulled away for a few moments further, until she can return with his request of a light tea and cake slice.
Difficult to tell the kind of cake it is by the slice, unassuming as it is, though there is some hint of a fruit-like scent to it, whether in the frosting or the cake itself. ]
... I hope I did not keep you waiting too long.
[ People... happen. But then again, so do cats, in this place. ]
no subject
....that is to say, this cat has identified a sucker, and Ken is bent over in his chair petting Harmony. So this is why people find cats soothing. The fur feels pleasant against his hand, and the rumbling sensation from a purr is very calming....
When his order arrives, though, he pats the cat and sits up. ] It's fine. Thanks very much.
[ He looks weirdly...exhilarated? CATS. You can zone out petting them. And think of nothing, but in a nice way.
Today's new thing Ken has learned he can do: he can pet cats. Crucial. ]
no subject
[ But that is the sort of cat Harmony is -- soft, fluffy, friendly; her previous owner once told them that he had taken her in in part due to her being passed over for her unusual looks, but she does quite well here in the judgment free zone. As do most of them. ]
no subject
I haven't been around cats before. [ It doesn't even occur to him to count Tailmon. Digimon are not pets. ] They're soft, aren't they.
[ Boy genius makes discovery:
cat soft. ]
no subject
They are. Like many people and species however, their personalities vary, as do their wants or limits. It can be quite interesting, getting to know them, and the extent of their trust.
[ The cats here at least had their own particularities, but were accustomed to this sort of lifestyle. ]
Mostly though, the one thing to keep in mind at least while in here is that... they will be ever intent upon your food and they must not be allowed to have it.
[ Lup made that very clear; which probably makes it all the more tempting for the cats to want to break the rules, but their care comes first. ]
no subject
[ He's going to have to be resilient, too, though. Now that he has been served, Harmony's eyes have somehow gotten EVEN BIGGER. ]
no subject
I trust that you will. The cats have to get over it, is all.
no subject
[ ...He should probably try the food while she's here since she was so good as to fetch him this cake, shouldn't he? Ken picks up his fork and splits a small portion off the end of his slice.
And has a gaze boring into his very soul from below. He stiffens. So cats can emit this much pressure, as well......!! ]
