♥ What: Zenitsu's got a canon update and he's not really happy (warning for some death mentions, also a lot of KNY spoilers)

[ 1 - Re-awakening, at Diacht's temple ]

[ Zenitsu had fallen into a coma for the past week. He himself wasn't aware of it, as he fell asleep as usual the night before. Then the priests came and took him back to the temple. The week went by with him sleeping like the dead, and if anyone were to visit him towards the end of the week, they may have seen some mysterious cracks appearing on his skin. The cracks are gone by the time you see him awake, though.

Zenitsu himself definitely wasn't having a good time. He's pulled back home, where the demon slayers are faced with another big battle again. When he wakes back up in Havenwell, he's extremely groggy, barely alive, with some struggle to figure out what month it is, not to mention he's in tears and wary. ]

What month is it??? Are my friends still here?! That was scary to wake up to!! Hello???

[ Who missed his noisy whining? ]

[ 2 - Around town, a little awkward ]

[ After he's recovered at the temple enough, he would make his way out of the temple and wander around in the city. He's tired, even though he's just woken up, and he would prefer to spend time in a quiet place. He's gotten used to all the sounds here at this point, it wasn't as dreadful as the ones he was hearing back in his home world, at least for the moment.

He's not whining, but his overall demeanor would be restless although he's trying his hardest to hide it after waking up.

If he's not paying attention, you may also see him scratching at his cheeks, as if something is supposed to be there. When he notices you, he'll immediately pull his hand away from his face to give a wave, if he knows you already. ]

Uhm... Hi?

[ Wow, is she really letting him down that much? Why does he have to make that face? Over something like this! Stop!! ]

Of course I'm sure! Zenitsu-san, let's put all this talk about gifts aside, already! I really just wanted to catch up with you, you know?

[ Zenitsu let's out a squeak at Kyoko's reaction, along with tears that seems to be super easy to come out of his eyes. ]

O-Okay! Just catching up! No gifts! Please don't be upset, Kyoko-chan!

[ And look at the great timing, they've arrive at the shopping center! ]

[ WHY IS HE CRYING ]

It's not a matter of me being upset! Nobody is upset at you right now!!

[ Some of the natives passing them by seem a bit concerned--what's this? a disagreement between two of their saviors?--but Kyoko pays them no mind. ]

Actually! I think you should really buy something for yourself! There has to be something you've been wanting!

[ Zenitsu's still lost and confused as he blinks at Kyoko's suggestion. It was more guilty-free by gifting others, not for himself. ]

For myself...?

[ Did he need anything? He tilts his head, trying to see if he had any list of things he wanted. Him and Tanjiro got some more clothes the other month so they're pretty much okay in terms of clothes. With the replicators, there wasn't an urgent need for any food items...

Only other things he could think of were wanting to gift all the female friends he's made in this world. ]

Hmm... I don't think I have anything that I'd want...

[ Why is this so hard! What's she supposed to say to get him to stop making such glum faces?? Kyoko scrambles. ]

Then--a souvenir! For Tanjiro-san! Let's pick out something to bring back to him!

Huh? A souvenir for Tanjiro?

[ He blinks, a little surprised that Kyoko would mention his friend's name like this. ]

Why him? I mean, I'd get gifts for his sister... [ like flowers. and flowers ]

[ What does he mean, why him? He didn't have any reason to give something to Kyoko, so why is Tanjiro different?? Come on Zenitsu! ]

Because you're friends, right? If you haven't given him anything but you gave things to his sister, that's even more of a reason to do it now!

Well... I guess so... But Tanjiro's pretty different.

[ Tanjiro would say anyone is his friend. Except those who are clearly evil. ]

He's got zero greed whatsoever, so it's actually pretty hard to know what to get for that guy?

That just makes it even more worth trying! [ Zenitsu doesn't seem too hyped, but this feels like a more useful path to take than anything else she's tried yet. Besides, Tanjiro is a good boy, he should get presents every now and then. ] We'll figure it out together! Even if he doesn't ask for things, you can still think about what he likes!

That's true...

[ Zenitsu also realizes that he barely shows appreciation towards Tanjiro. In fact, when they were in the training program back in his home world, all he did was shove Tanjiro around for not being nice enough to get him out of the hellish training. ]

Thanks though, Kyoko-chan! I'm sure with you helping out we can figure something out. Tanjiro's got a super keen sense of smell, so anything with strong scent is definitely out the window.

[ As they talk, they approach the first store at the area, and Zenitsu will peek in to see if there's anything that would catch his eye. ]

That's right... I hope we don't accidentally choose something with a bad scent we ordinary folks can't pick up on.

[ But Zenitsu seems to be coming around to the idea, so she relaxes a little as they reach that storefront. On display is... uh, stationery? It's just stationery. A few notebooks, samples of paper in various shades, some pencils. Thrilling stuff? Kyoko leans in with interest anyway. ]

--Ohh, they're getting better! You can't tell just from looking at it that it's synthetic!

[ Zenitsu's attention was getting drawn to the pens they had when Kyoko comments about the paper. Stationary items weren't something Zenitsu would default to for gifts before, so he blinks in surprise at her comment. ]

Synthetic? What do you mean?

[ He already knew that not a lot of people would resort to handwritten letters for messages in this world, especially when they have the communicators to instantly send and receive messages, so in a way it's no surprise that paper creation in this world isn't necessary. Even with that, for Zenitsu coming from an older time period, not having any paper is still hard to imagine. ]

Were there no paper at all at first?

Oh--artificial, you know? Made from chemicals.

[ It hadn't occurred to her that Zenitsu wouldn't know that! But then, if he's from the same time as Tanjiro, maybe the concepts are sort of new for him. ]

I don't know if there was nothing before, but real paper is definitely pretty rare around here. There are hardly any trees here, right? And the natives probably haven't thought about using it for a long time. But I guess with us here now, there's a demand for it.

Chemicals? That doesn't really sound healthy...

[ Historywise, paper production seems to be shifting during his era, but Zenitsu isn't that familiar with paper production, nor did he think too much about it. ]

I did hear paper was rare and with how people communicated using the tablet things, they wouldn't need any use for paper too. I didn't know they're able to make them straight from chemials.

Well, it can't be helped, you know? And it's not like anyone's eating it.

[ Should... should she tell him the food is pretty much all synthetic? Maybe not?? ]

I guess it's possible to make pretty much anything from chemicals, if you can just figure out the right process? Or something.

[ If you do tell him, he'll have his routine freak-out and probably never eat the food again...

...Until he starts starving so much he has to eat.

Then again, Shinobu was able to create so many different kinds of medicine, anything's possible. ]

Well, I guess I can get it with medicine and stuff... But even food too?

[ Or he can mention it himself! He's halfheartedly mentioning it while looking through the pens, picking out a few. ]

[ Oh, so he thought of it himself? Maybe she wasn't giving Zenitsu enough credit. ]

I mean, we'd starve otherwise, right?

[ She keeps her tone light, throwing in a quick little laugh before hurriedly moving the conversation on. ]

Anyway, should we go in here? It's interesting, right?

[ It sure sucks when halfhearted comments actually turn out to be true because he's not exactly mentally prepared for it. He almost drops the pens that were for display upon hearing Kyoko's response and looks over at her with shock as puts it back to display. ]

Wait, are you saying that the food here's like that too?

[ He actually... didn't know...

He's going to not think about it. ]

Y-yeah, lets go inside...

[ Wait no she shouldn't have said anything! Freezing up, Kyoko's eyes dart nervously to look at Zenitsu sidelong for a moment before she decides to

drop

the subject.

Yeah. No need to think about it Zenitsu!!! Please just forget it! Kyoko does her best to beam those thoughts into his head as she zips over to the door. ]

Yes! Inside! Going in!! I bet there are things in here that won't smell too strong for Tanjiro-san!

[ Kyoko's thoughts come out as something more aggressive to Zenitsu, and for a moment fear sets in his head as he squeaks. So Scary!! But as soon as she starts to head over to the store entrance he hurries to follow suit. ]

W-wait for me, Kyoko-chan!

[ Never fear, she won't leave him far behind. Kyoko only bustles in far enough to take a good glance around. Gotta keep things moving! ]

So! You were looking at something before, right? Pencils, pens? Let's find some more!

[ Once he quickly catches up to Kyoko, he gives a small nod before getting a better look of what's inside the store. ]

Yeah, I was thinking of a nice pen... Tanjiro likes to write letters back home, he's had a lot of friends to write letters to. I figured it'd be nice for him to have one while we're here too.

[ Zenitsu barely wrote letters though. His teacher would keep writing about Kaigaku so he never responded, and he knew it'd be a waste of ink and paper to write one to Kaigaku himself so he never wrote one to him either. But maybe he should also get a pen while they're here too. Maybe things will be different while they're in Havenwell.

He quickly puts that thought to the side, because right now they're looking for a gift for his friend, not himself. ]

Letters, huh? Even back home, people didn't send them so often anymore....

[ Leading the way to the writing utensils, Kyoko wondered idly what kind of postal system even existed in Havenwell. Package delivery seemed to be a thing, but could you get a robot to deliver something as small as a letter? ]

But that sounds like him! He definitely seems like the diligent type to write letters to everyone he knows.

Eh, really? So is the communicator thingy they have here closer to what you would send messages with?

[ Come to think of it, he doesn't recall ever figuring out what era Kyoko's from. He did freak out about what timeline Cyan's from before, maybe Kyoko is from a similar time?

Postal system in Havenwell is a legit concern though. For Tanjiro and Zenitsu, they had the messenger birds who'd relay and deliver messages so that worry wasn't on Zenitsu's mind at the moment. ]

Yeah, I'd say other than training and spending time with his sister, that'd be his favorite passtime.

[ There's also headbutting things, but Zenitsu doesn't count that as a normal hobby.

Anyways, he goes to start looking at what kind of pens they had. ]

Say, what do you like doing on your free time? [ Because come to think of it, he barely knew what were Kyoko's likes and dislikes. ]

Yes--it's a lot nicer than anything I ever had at home, but the way it works is pretty similar. I was a little surprised!

[ She kinda would have expected a world filled with robots to have something even more advanced than these tablet-like things. Then again, the natives don't use them, so maybe they just never felt the need to update their smartphones too much further.

But there's definitely a special charm to handwritten letters, isn't there? Kyoko eyes the stationery for a moment longer before turning to admire the pens with Zenitsu. The change in subject makes her look up with a blink, though. ]

Hm? Just about all of my time is free these days, if you get down to it.... [ Which is not something she can be happy about. ] So if you don't count ordinary chores and helping out at the temple.... Well, I did decide to read through the whole public library system here, but I haven't even made it out of the DIY section yet.
