I've seen this happen once before- one of the planets I visited, years and years ago, was inhabited by people who'd transferred their souls into robot bodies. In their case, there hadn't been much choice. Either go robot, or die from some nasty plague. Their world didn't have such needy gods, though, so it was fine. Wonder if things got bad here, too.
