Kyoko's bright mop of hair was a little more mussed than she'd like it to be for a dinner with friends, but it couldn't be helped now. She'd changed out of her Santa of the Clause uniform in a rush this afternoon, eager to put the finishing touches on her gift, and there just hadn't been time to spruce herself up at all after it finally met her approval.

Not that she expected Kaito or Shinji to mind--aah, they really were such good, generous boys. She truly was glad they'd been kind enough to invite her over tonight, of all nights.

Though it had been months now since she'd been given explicit permission to enter their home without knocking, Kyoko still never did so unless s t e a l t h was in order. So she would have knocked today even if her arms hadn't been busy carefully cradling a large, suspiciously cake-sized box.

Oh? Kyoko? Are you implying you wish might be... nefarious? Goodness!

"Very capable." Nobody more capable than someone so driven and hardworking, probably.

Goodbye for now, sparklers. You will be seen again, but first they must enjoy some tasty cake. A real treat to top off those sweet wishes. And with that thought in mind, now that the lights are back on, "Ohh, it looks really good."

A devious wish for the two of them to love themselves, gosh. Truly she was incorrigible.

But any thoughts of wishes, nice ones or otherwise, were banished when the lights came up and Kyoko found herself blinking at a cake that she... didn't recognize?

"... Oh?" It did indeed look lovely, however! "That's... not the cake I brought?"

"...That you brought?"

Kai blinked, slowly turning to stare at the box he had set aside.

The box with a suspiciously familiar weight to it.

The box... that probably had a cake inside.

She brought...

Shinji follows Kai's gaze over to that box, the mystery box that he hadn't thought to address earlier, the one that definitely seems to be

cake sized.

Ah.

"We... um, weren't expecting you to bring a cake."

Maybe by now, Kyoko thought they were done. There couldn't possibly be anything else to show her merciless amounts of kindness with, was probably what she was thinking. They had gone through all this "trouble" (it wasn't trouble), put so many things together, gave her so much...! (They really didn't think it was that much to be perfectly honest! They could have given her a whole lot more!)

Which was precisely the thought Kai had in mind. That was why when things seemed to finally just be calm and lazy, he'd wandered off to do whatever mystery things dogs had to do sometimes. Something inane like going to the bathroom or getting another drink or what have you.

Nothing that really warranted any suspicion until he came back to settle next to Kyoko, leaning in a bit to say, "Need you to close your eyes for a sec."

Kyoko followed all these gazes over to... ah, the box is still sitting there, pristine and untouched.

"Right... come to think of it, you never did open it...." Why had she thought that? Really she'd just forgotten all about it in the shuffle, and when the topic of Cake came up her simple brain had automatically jumped to the one she already knew existed.

Instead of more generosity wow gosh.

Dark red flooded her face as she mumbled, "I thought I'd try making you a Christmas cake... because I didn't guess... at all.... Please forget about it."

If they were done now, Kyoko would have had zero complaints--would still feel overjoyed, in fact, just completely spoiled. How could she even dare to imagine a single thing more, let alone expect it?

It was enough to sit here in her spot at the kotatsu after being kindly forbidden from helping with the dishes, basking giddily in the warmth that just wouldn't leave her chest. Nothing could possibly disrupt this peace.

Except for maybe a dog.

"H-huh?!" With a small jump, she leaned away, cheeks flushed pink, eyes wide and not closed at all. What was he doing, getting all close and delivering a line like that all of a sudden? What was that for?? "Huh??!"

By forget about you meant immediately roll out from under the kotatsu to go grab it, right? Right. Cuz that's what Kai was doing, immediately, right now.

"A Christmas cake!" He exclaimed, moving with Great Speed to grab that box. "I'm going to eat it."

Here, let him just scoot that whole cake that he absolutely put zero effort into whatsoever, definitely that was the only other cake around, definitely it was just Eh-- let him scoot that over fully in front of Kyoko so there was room for a whole second cake between himself and Shinji.

What was this now. Kai chuckled a little at the endearing display, shaking his head a bit. He was clearly holding something behind his back, and he pre-emptively leaned back away again to keep it Secret.

"One more thing. I couldn't uh... wrap it? Y'know. So." Have a sheepish tilt of his head. "Y'gotta close your eyes."

There's definitely a small part of Shinji that thinks that diverting attention away from the clearly more important birthday isn't the best idea, but also, like... if Kyoko already went out of her way to make a Christmas cake, it would be a shame to not have it on the appropriate day, right?

That's. Probably how it works.

"I've never actually had a Christmas cake before," he says, leaning in to get a better look. You're not going to eat it all yourself, are you, Kai? "If you made it, I'm sure it's delicious."

Oh no, this was supposed to be an awkward situation and yet! Everyone was being so cute about it! Gosh! Cheeks still pink, Kyoko watched them with round eyes from behind this whole entire cake that had been placed in front of her, gosh.

"It's nothing fancy," she cautioned, and it really wasn't--just a very standard strawberry shortcake at the end of the day, though she'd tried to dress it up with strawberries sliced into flower shapes and generous swoops of vanilla frosting. "But, um, please help yourselves! I'd really... like to try this one, though...."

This mysterious cake that had been prepared for her very own day, goodness.

She'd just been startled, okay! And that was a strange thing to say out of nowhere, with no explanation! But oh, now it was clear that something sneaky was afoot. Somehow, her spoiling wasn't over yet?

"O-oh. Oh." Kyoko dipped her head for a moment, bashful, but when she raised it again her eyes were closed. Pink still dusted the crests of her cheeks, but she wasn't going to protest any more than a little mumble of, "You didn't have to... you really didn't."

The cake that had been presented to Kyoko was a very pretty spiced carrot cake. There was no glossing over the fact that neither of these boys had made this particular cake, it was far too professional and fancy looking. It was sure to be delicious though, as everything Lup made tended to be!

But to be frank this extremely cute Christmas cake also looked incredibly tasty. Kai let out an audible 'ohh~' as he unveiled it. Kyoko hadn't intended it as a birthday addition, but it felt imperative that they appreciate the efforts she had put into it! Because look at it! This very cute cake that she had made for them.

"Two whole birthday cakes means we get cake for breakfast too," he said cheerfully, prepping a slice for Shinji. Here you go.

There were. Definitely. Only two birthday cakes.

While she couldn't see it, the smile he was wearing was evident enough in his voice. "Doesn't mean I didn't want to."

And now came the actual gift giving part. It felt real silly to be so nervous about it, so he was trying exceedingly hard to play it super cool. It was Kyoko, she'd probably be real nice about anything Kai tried to give her. So he took a deep breath and leaned back over to very gently lay a crown atop her hair.

It was a delicate affair. Carefully woven together were dried flowers in white and pink. He'd been pretty hopeful about the choices, but... They looked nice, he thought as he leaned back, especially now with all that soft warmth.

"There we go."

They all get two cakes today! There is no downside to this particular outcome.

"Ahh," Shinji's eyes light up as the cake is revealed, and a pleased smile crosses his face as the slice is passed his way. As Professional at the purchased cake looks, there's an undeniable charm to the one that Kyoko crafted herself, and knowing that she's never delivered a bad result to them, he's certain it tastes just as good as it looks. "Hmm, a little bit of both wouldn't be a bad birthday treat, right?"

How fortuitous!

Listen! It was a beautiful cake that had been purchased for her, transported to this house for her, decked out with sparklers for her, and served generously to her!! That was all pretty exciting, and Kyoko intended to honor it!

But she couldn't stay serious about it for much longer, when the atmosphere in here was so light. She huffed at Kaito, though a smile was pulling at her mouth again. "Cake isn't a proper breakfast! But... two slices tonight should be okay."

Kaito might be successfully playing it cool, but Kyoko wasn't having much luck. Hands gently curled into fists in her lap, she sat very straight and very still, with only the heat in her cheeks to ponder while her eyes were closed.

With the featherlight weight on her head, the slight rustle of her hair made her breath catch just slightly--she didn't know why. If someone had asked her, she wouldn't have been able to explain the tense stillness in her chest, as if she were desperately holding something in. --No, it was just anticipation, right?

There was the smallest pause after Kaito spoke again, and then her eyes fluttered open.

"...Ah? Uh?" Tentative hands went up to brush over whatever it was adorning her head. "Huh?" Wide eyes meeting Kaito's, she tried not to stammer. "... Can I... take it off, or...?"

That coolness wasn't going to last long, admittedly. He wouldn't have even thought to figure out a gift if she hadn't given him one, and one she had put so much effort into at that...! This didn't really feel like it lived up to that, but he could at least say he tried.

He met her eyes with a small smile, shrugging as nonchalantly as he could.

"'Course. It's yours now."

Huff at him all you like, his stance wasn't changing!

"Oho, we've been granted permission for two." Let him just get his own slice of this very tasty looking strawberry affair that he was very excited to try. "And then cake for breakfast," he whispered conspiratorially to no one. Now he was just leaning into it.

She hadn't been sure, was all--it was hard to know what Kaito was ever thinking. Sensing the fragility, Kyoko lifted her gift with ginger fingers and carefully brought it down into view.

Oh. Her mouth formed the shape, though the noise only came out as a small puff of air.

"You... you made this?" Her voice was soft with awe, almost shy.

There was a beat as Kai nearly convinced himself to say no, it'd just reminded him of her. No, he hadn't been hoarding flowers and trying to make this work. They'd just been being nice when they said he was kinda good at it, his would have been a mess probably! He wasn't the one with good, creative hands around here.

There was a minute bite of his lip as Kai nodded instead.

"I tried," he offered in a murmur.

The only way to make sure they don't have cake for breakfast is to stick around for breakfast. Just saying.

"One of each, for tonight." And he will politely pretend he didn't hear those sneaky, sneaky plans. Whatever happens to the cakes tomorrow.... we will See. For now, let's just make sure that everyone has their set of slices, shall we?

Come on Kai, you couldn't think you were going to just get away with that. Even if your boyfriend was an enabler! "Breakfast is meant to be a full proper meal," Kyoko insisted, but there was a liveliness behind her stern tone; bickering like this made it that much easier to not get wrapped up in sentimentality, and relax.

"Sweets like cake are meant to be a snack, you understand! A snack!" But she was going to happily except a plate with more than a snack-sized portion now.

"I'm just seeing a whole lot of fruits and veggies going on here," he pointed out as the slices were doled out appropriately. "Real good elements of a meal right there."

Kyoko watched Kaito's face in that moment, saw the hesitation, and knew--this had been hours upon hours of work, of experimentation and failure, of strong hands toiling over a delicate task. How long had he furrowed his brow over piles of fragile flowers? All because he thought--no, he hoped?--it would be something she would like.

And after all that, it still wasn't obvious to him how completely charmed she was, how overwhelmingly happy. He wasn't sure now, and probably never had been, but he'd tried for her anyway.

Gently, gently, gently, she set the flower crown on the table, and then looked at Kaito again. Whatever it was in her chest that Kyoko had been holding back a moment ago, something explosive must have gotten mixed up into it, because now it was bursting out all at once. It sent her tipping forward on her knees, leaning to close the space between them so her arms could wrap around his shoulders.

"I really, really like it," she smiled, chin tucked down against his shoulder. He needed to know.
