With the coming of Lasra, there was at least one new shop opening its doors in the quiet bustle of the Shopping District! There had been a distinct lack of places to simply sit in that district, but look no further if you were searching for such a spot. There are warm lights on inside, with the sights of large, comfy chairs and couches beckoning from the welcoming windows.

At times, from the same windows, you can catch sight of a pink little girl sitting near the glass, thumbing through an honest-to-goodness paper book.

Walking through the door would earn you a soft greeting. Welcome to Petals & Pages~

[Somehow that snicker does little to convince Nanu. But that's okay. He's not exactly the most stand-up guy himself, even being a cop.]

...They punish us?

[The wrath of an angry Tapu back home was something to be feared and respected. Tapu Bulu--the guardian deity Nanu served--decimated an entire village because one of those Thrifty Megamarts was built nearby on sacred ground. No one lives there now, expect a bunch of ghost Pokemon. He wasn't inclined to think the gods here would resort to such displays of destruction when resources were already so limited here, but, he's curious what Magolor means.]

Those weird drinks don't count, right?

Naaahhh, that was an accident. Probably. Who knows? I'm talking about some past situations. I don't know if it's meant to be a punishment, or if they'd admit to that even if it is . . . but even if it's not deliberate, it's caused by imbalances in the gods' power! So in other words, if we don't do what we're supposed to do and do it right, we end up in situations where we might have nightmares that can only be cured by sleeping in someone's bed, or be kept awake by squeaking animals that only go away if you cuddle. Or you get sick, but guess what cures it? Go on, guess!

[Magolor waves his hand merrily. There's probably no need to guess, but he's gonna make Nanu do it anyway. The point is clear either way: the gods have ways of making you cooperate.]

[Nanu decides to take some of that with a grain of salt, especially with Magolor's prior admittance of being such good (non-existent) law abiding citizen, but appreciates the context of his experience and past situations. It's something Nanu doesn't have here yet, not something he can fall back on reliably like at home.

Either way, it's a little foreboding, especially to someone who is naturally so cynical.]

A lot of hassle to go through all these pleasantries when we're really glorified cattle.

[Milktank are considered sacred animals though in some parts, right? Probably? Not a comparison he wants to think about.]

Got enough problems back home but at least our Tapu offered protection and blessings for when we were well behaved.

[And you know, scorn and punishment for when they were displeased so that's an unfortunately relatable point for Nanu.]

Your Tapu . . . is that what you call your gods back home?

[Protection and blessings for the well-behaved, yep. Sounds pretty godlike. In that light, maybe it isn't such a surprise that people here who play the touchy feely game get some tangible benefits, and those that don't get pushed into it with increasing aggression.

But it doesn't worry him all that much. They may be glorified cattle, but a lot of them are very powerful cattle—a poor decision to bring in and then mistreat any more blatantly than they already get it.]

The gods here must be pretty desperate, considering the situation. I'm surprised they aren't even more careless about handling us.

Tapu--yeah, guardians. Not quite gods but close enough. One for each island we live on, four in all.

[There were Pokemon more powerful even than the Tapu of course but on the localized totem pole they weren't to be disrespected; they were probably more fickle and capricious than many more of the Pokemon too powerful or mysterious to even deign themselves with public appearances. Nanu's completely comfortable with that.

Less predictable were of course, people.]

But no one's misbehaved yet.

[He catches the implication though and underscores it with gentle emphasis on yet. How would any figure of authority here even handle wayward people with powers or strange abilities or... whatever Magolor was. Nita can talk to inanimate objects, probably even the planet if she wasn't specifically limited here, and Pyra was able to tap into some divine energy. Who knows what the others here are capable of?

...well, if he were in Havenwell's inhabitants' shoes he'd probably handles it the same way he handles all the other seemingly impossible hurdles in his life--by largely not handling it at all.]

Not too hard to throw an old man like me in jail but you? [He tries to make light of it anyway.] Would you even fit behind those bars?

Hehehe. I'll leave that up to the imagination. I can't go giving all my secrets away! You never know when you need an ace up your sleeve!

[Of course, if he were really that concerned about it, he could just lie and protest: of course I could be jailed like anyone else! I'm not that special! But some lies aren't worth telling. There's frankly no way the inhabitants here don't know everything they want to know already about the offworlders.]

These guardians, are they people? Spirits? Pokemon? Who knows, maybe the gods of this planet are just Pokemon themselves!

[He doesn't know enough about Pokemon to dispute it at least!]

No lies there. [It was nice having an ace up a sleeve.]

Based on those statues it's possible. Rawna'd be a dragon type for sure. Ainea? Not sure, maybe normal or fairy. Diacht's as if Honchkrow took a human shape. Ohma reminds me a lot of Liepard.

[Nanu's aware he's rattling all these names off to someone who seems to have an unknown amount of Pokemon knowledge, but also it was kind of nice to rattle off for a minute as if he were back home and that knowledge was commonplace.]

You know any of those or was that a bunch of gibberish to your ears?

[It was gibberish. But Magolor appreciates listening to it, charmed anyway. He's met Pokemon by now, and he knows some random things about them, but he's still lacking in some very basic knowledge, which is genuinely interesting to pick up as he goes. So he smiles over with a flick of his ears and a merry shrug.]

I don't know a thing! I'm a little embarrassed. Will would be ashamed of me~. I don't even know what you mean by type, though I do know what dragons and fairies are! We have those too.
